And yes I am going to change the pistons, either new oversized gze pistons, or Arias depending on the budget. Honestly swapping my engine for the gze half-cut doesn't make sense at all at this stage of my research. The ease of building my standard motor, versus swapping to a gze and then pulling it out again at one stage to recondition it doesn't make sense. I don't want to register a different motor and engineering would be more difficult. Plus I want the sleeper effect of a standard looking motor![]()

Thanks to DeftAnesthetik, Big T, 4agte, DigitalPho3nix and The Witzl for clearing this up. Gave the first 4 guys rep points...sorry The Witzl I don't think I had enough points to giv...plus you have too many rep points anyway![]()
Big T, that pic helped me and what you said about the part numbers being identical just confirms it and was the proof I needed to put this to rest. So after 3 pages of my whining I finally have a conclusive answer to the differences in the motors...and thanks to the The Witzl once again for the link to that very helpful thread.

np dude good luck with the build keep us posted
Motor is out of the car and now stripped. This week I have to decide on the rods...going to be deffinitely shotpeening and probably ARP bolts going from FLYNSX's rebuild. I think standard rods (minus those upgrades) are suitable for my build.
Some parts that need replacing like various water related fittings, like the inlet sitting on top of the transmission, and replacing the water pump. Also an oil line that potentially needs replacing...all these little things that add up
When I get a decent digital camera I'll start taking pics of the progress and post them up.

Attention Boostboy
Just so you know GZE bottom ends can handle sh1t loads of power. I have made 283 rwkw @ 30 psi numerous times with no hassels. I then started playing around with Nos and ran it lean, melted through a head and had 30 psi of boost go through the cooling system and blow the header tank clean off the radiator! After this miss hap the motor was pulled down and inspected the pistons and rods were perfect. ( I couldnt belive how stong they are as there was major damage to the head)
Just make sure you use rods from an AE92 variant of the smallport engines.... the AE101 4A-GZE rods are weaker than then AE92 4A-GZE rods......
....why? The AE101 rods are the same between the 20V and the gze!!!
This is why i keep saying that the AE92 smallport 4A-G** engine is the BEST of the 4A-series. It has the strongest of everything!

30psi 4agte, so the compression ratio (8.9:1 for the AE101 GZE pistons) is fine for a turbo setup? I've heard conflicting stories.
The Witzl...yeah I think I've said somewhere before that I have the smallport motor from the AE93....I was suprised after my research how resilient they are, and after pulling apart the engine, seeing how strong the rods look and the pistons with the cuts on the top for valve clearance...just awesome seeing it in the flesh.

Boostboy:
The comp should be ok depending on how much boost you plan to run?
I use a 2mm HKS metal gasket and have modified the combustion chambers to bring the comp down and be able to run so much boost on my setup.
If you keep boost under 1 bar (14.7 psi ) I dont think you will have any probs at all!
I'll be running about 15psi intitially...but I would like to have the potential to go between 20 - 25 psi.

What turbo you using?
Id prob lower comp a little if you are planing on going that high.
It's all in the tune. Bigworm ran 1.5 bar using 8.9 comp pistons without problems. His comp ratio is actually at around 9.1 due to the shaving/decking of the block. He uses an autronic SMC with CDI. My comp is almost identical to this and i plan on running 20psi.

Honestly I'll probably be more than happy to run 15psi forever...but I don't want my engine to be running at it's limits....it would be satisfying to know that the engine still has more power in it after driving it for a year if you know what I mean.
I'm looking at getting the Garrett T28RS the 'disco potato'![]()

Im not saying it cant be done. but you can start to run into probs . Like you say though it does depend on tune and engine setup. Its just safer and makes the motor more reliable at that level. If you want to go all out then high comp can have lots of benefits. I have only decompressed my motor because i plan on running 35-40 psi @ 9000+rpm
boostboy: the t28rs is a great little turbo and sounds perfect for what you have in mind. It will still be efficent at 15 psi although it will statr to drop off after that. Not too much of a prob if you have a decent cooler.
