It's been several years since I did my water pump swap so I admit my memory is pretty flaky... however I recall it had something to do with the bypass outlet at the back of the pump. Looking at Southo's first photo, you can see it just below the P in "Pump"; something about that made the GE and GTE pumps non-interchangeable. I also tried using a GE front section on a GTE rear section and that wouldn't work either, I think the bolt pattern may have been different? Sorry I can't be more specific, it's been too long.

Anyway in your first post you imply the engine originally had a GE pump - is this definitely the case? If so you should replace it with another GE pump since this is obviously working.

Do you have the pump out? If so take some photos and post them here.

    Shane
You want a 2JZ-GTE JZA80 Supra or 1JZ-GTE JZZ30 Soarer water pump (same part numbers these days I believe)
The 2JZ-GE and 1JZ-GE (non-hydro) water pump lacks the bypass for the GTE heads
The 2JZ-GTE JZS147 Aristo, 1JZ-GTE JZA70 Supra, 1JZ-GTE JZX81 Chaser and 1JZ-GTE JZX90 Chaser water pumps are all the hydro type, so aren't suitable for your application either.
    GSE20 IS250 - daily
    UZZ30 Soarer - 1UZ-FE/R154/Adaptronic - trackday roughie
UZZ32 Soarer - Active Hydropneumatic Suspension (A-SUS) & Active Four Wheel Steering (A-4WS) - cruiser

Damn, all the quotes I have for the Supra pump are 400 bucks!!

Can you mod the hydraulic section of the pump to "deactivate" it???

Check my build thread chuck. I think the info is in there. You don't need to make a loop. You can remove the internal valve, blank off all the fluid entries, fill it up with fluid and away you go. You can use bolts to block all but one entry up. One has a barb fitting for a hose. I just stuck a round bit of metal in there an brazed it up. Once you remove the internal valve the fluid will recirculate internally. (you will know exactly what I am talking about when you pull it apart). Also the pump must be removed in order to fill it up with fluid if you do it that way since the port where you fill it will face downward when installed on the engine.

This is a lot neater than than running loops.

Pic of pump. I couldn't find a bolt to fit that replace that big back thing.

I have done similar to Dennis (with his advice)...

Remove big bolt at bottom of pic.
    Remove the spring and piston
    Screw back in

I cut and welded closed the resevior feed and fitted a shortened bolts with washer under it to the pump outlet.

Ideally you'd open the pump up and remove the drum and vanes inside, but you need to dissassemble the pump to do this.
