Default 1JZ to 2JZ GTE water pump woes

    Hello All,

I got a 2JZGTE water pump... Part Numer 16100-49846 and it fits but it's got 1 too many outlets as I'll explain below... The pump is off a JZA80... So it looks like I got the wrong one Monday I'll try and source a proper one... Or did I order the right one?

Here is the picture why, there is a water outlet straight under the pump behind the pully as depicted on Pic 1... Pic 2 shows on the 1JZ water pump that there is no outlet there.

    Picture 1.

    Picture 2.

And when I pulled the thermostat off... It's screwed...

I'm pretty sure that extra outlet is nothing to worry about, that's there so when the shaft seal fails & the water gets into the bearing it can escape out there, & it looks like they've just made it so a hose can be attached to route the water away.
The 4AGE water pump has the same thing, only it doesn't have the fitting, just a hole in the housing in the same location. I don't know why they'd put a hose on it, as when you see water come out there it means you need a new water pump.

Dunno what the deal is with the thermostat, where was that loose bit attached?
When you change the water pump surely you'd replace the thermostat at the same time anyway?

That's the drain hole there, = A Good Thing. I ordered a 2JZ water pump a while ago to replace a 1JZ one with the hydraulic pump on it. Fitted no problems.

My 1JZ VVTi had that style of pump on it and there is a short length of rubber hose connected to the drain nipple. This hose is only about 150mm long.

So what should I do with the drain hole? Just attach a hose that leads to no where and let it dangle? Throw the pump back on the car or get one with no drainage hole? or should I replace it with one without a drainage hole? I'm so confused what do with it?

As for the thermostat, the bottom broke plate, spring and little washer thingy broke off and was floating in the pump hope no other metal fragments is floating in the cooling system.

Install the pump & don't worry about the drainage hole. The only time water will come out of it is when the pump's rooted & needs replacing anyway, which should be many years away.
As for the thermostat, get a new one & give the cooling system a really good flush before putting it all together. Then flush it again.

Another Question to all... How tight should I do the water pump bolts to?

    Cheers.

I have just fitted the exact same pump on my 2JZ ( was the hydraulic, now thermo fans) and as EvilJack said, there is a pipe you can buy for that drain hole, but it's easier and cheaper to get a small piece of heater hose or similar and just put that on. (or leave it off, it won't make any difference in the grand scheme of things and as has been said - when you see water coming out of that pipe - it's time to change the pump anyway..

The Torque requirements for the water pump bolts are 210kg/cm

Does anyone know what it is in foot pounds as I've got an imperial torque wrench?

Thanks for the specs though ProjectSleeper!

    hmm sounds like a lot..

    210 (kg / cm) = 14 111.3485 pound / ft

either the conversion is wrong, or mr sleeper smashed an extra key i just did them up 'reasonably' tight..

I was informed that the drail fitting was so you could tell if your water pump is fubared (leaking water = farked seals)...I did the same conversion on my 1J after my stock hydraulic fan water pump went kaboom...glad I did...much cheaper to replace and is way waaaay neater in the engine bay

    It's definitely 210kg/cm...
I'll scan and post the page from the manual tonight when I get home.

my understanding (if I am reading my conversion table correctly) is that 210kg/cm =
    approx 20.6 Nm
    or
    approx 15.2 lb/ft
