The other technical limitation lies in that some of the fields cannot be changed by anyone other than a mod. One of these is the car models field. When i signed up i had an MX83 and AE86, and i was just updating some stuff in my profile the other day and tried to add the 22, but to no avail.
Anyway, this is OT. In this case if he has any questions as to why he was deleted then he can always see the Membership and Feedback section (and hence this thread) even as a non-logged-in account.

It's a shame to see him get deleted like that, if the admin says there was a good reason then there must have been but it's just a bit of a shock for some of us considering most people got along with him pretty well. I hope it gets sorted out and he can come back with no hard feelings.

think of it this way, if he turned out to be a rpick and ripped people off, then everyone would be up in arms that he was accepted with bodgy details...... no?

    Guys,

Rightly or wrongly the longer the forums are online the less tollerant those of us that have been around for a long time get. ANd thats all of us, not just us Mods,

The first time someone asks the "wrong" question or does the wrong thing they get friendly advice not to do it again. For example a question like... "Why can't I start a thread in the classifieds" Any long standing member will know how these questions get dealt with by the wider community, (Ie not the Mods)

The first 20- 30 times are like water off a ducks back, everyone is getting used to things and cuts each other some slack for not bothering to read the FAQ, by the time we get to 30-50 odd times its iritating but you still help out. At the 100 Mark you ignore the question, BY 150 your probably slamming the neg rep button and by 200 you have added a nasty message. When you have added a few zero's to that number you wanna shoot the next poor bastard who asks and Zero Tollerance is an Automatic action !

These forums get 45-60 applications a day when its not busy and we haven't had a major event. Each one is manually approved and the process wears thin when you have looked over thousands and less than 2/3's are done right the first time round. You feel like your time is being wasted and you get less and less forgiving to the blatant breaches. The guideline isn't small print its Big fuck off red letters, If the mods PM'd and emailed each person we would need to hire a full time staffmember just to keep on top of them. Was he contacted, I honestly don't know. I'd say probably not to be honest and I support the action. The rules are there, we don't have many, He didn't follow them and his account got deleted. He can re apply and be back online in no time at all.

I don't know the guy, I don't know how he behaved on the forums and I don't have an issue with him.

I hope that makes things clearer

C'mon now Stu, would my alter-ego have any reference to JZ engines in their forum handle?

As this is a visble part of the forum for guests, I really do hope he reads this and re-joins with kosher info.

Edit - I've said my piece, I really do appreciate the efforts from those who give their time to moderate and administrate. Apologies to anyone I've offended

Maybe one way to help with people reading the FAQ and rules is to send them a PM when they first join. I just joined a building forum (mmm gazebos), and when i first logged in it showed that i had 1 new message. Now who in their right mind isnt going to go and check that message.
In the first message it contained a brief welcome like "Hi, and welcome to the forums yadda yadda yadda, hope you enjoy your stay." But the sticker was in bold
Please read the FAQ and Rules before posting.*link goes here*

This had to be an automated thing, and they were using vB as well, so it may be an option that we could enable on the board.

    Hi Guys,

We'll see what we can do about sending out a welcome message (however there's reason to believe most people will not read it ).

In terms of addressing a user's details, in the majority of cases the user is contacted to provide any missing details. The overwhelming majority of pm'ed users ignore the request until potential consequences are mentioned - people just don't like to play ball unless "stimulated"...

In the past users that gave completely bogus information and slipped through have been deleted - I will usually check to see how many posts they have made, and their contribution to the community, and the effect the removal will have. People that made a mockery of the required information get little leniency, whereas people that have filled out most of the form appropriately will get more slack.
For example "A***hole republic", in a publically visible field, would yeild little sympathy, especially if the rest of the fields are filled out in a similar fashion (and I don't know if they were because I never saw them, but I'd hazard a guess they weren't too far off).

While it may have been better to handle this situation a slightly different way, if he's genuinely as easy going as asserted, he shouldn't have an issue with it and should re-apply. Given the amount of abuse we receive from people being rejected on application (usually from people that fill out details in the above fashion), whoever deleted the account probably made the call bearing the potentially abuse from someone not at all eager to be helpful, so it may have been a clear decision not to start a dialogue.
Personally I have a very low tolerance for people who are blatantly trying to circumvent the rules - you cannot claim the moral high ground if you are blatantly doing something wrong. We usually try to go well beyond the minimum effort, but it can't always happen.

It's interesting that nobody who has posted in this thread (who were clearly aware of the mistake - not mentioning any names) brought up this error to any of the moderators
(On a completely different angle, do any of you consider yourselves to be guilt free? )

In terms of signups, the majority of people applying are perfectly aware of the requirements however they completely ignore them - it doesn't matter how many times you write "Fill it out properly", people will still ignore them - contacting each applicant individually is a time consuming process that has been trialled a number of times and every time yeilded an extremely low reponse, to the point that it is simply not practical.

First up I deleted the account in question.

    Why did I delete it?
The user had blatantly bogus information in their profile.

Could I have just asked him to give correct information?
    Yes I definately could of.

Why didn't I ask him to provide correct info?
It was obviously no simple mistake on his part he made a conscious decision not to follow the rules and therefore the consequence for not following those rules was what he recieved.

From what I'm seeing here it seems that peoples view is that if he's a good bloke the rules shouldn't apply. This kind of shit makes it extremely difficult to get people to behave in a decent manner. If you don't apply the rules as uniformly as possible then anyone who does get pulled into line will bitch and moan that "Everybody's Mate" doesn't have to follow the same rules.

It also annoys me that by the appearance shown in this thread plenty of other peopl knew before hand that his info was bogus but did nothing about it. If he had contacted the board to have his details fixed there would be no issue, I'd have updated his info.

There is nothing stopping him from signing up with valid details and using the same user name.
