1JZ water pump rattling...need advice plz :)

Hi guys,

The water pump in my 1JZ Cressida (JZX81) is rattling like mad, and will die very soon (no leaks fortunately). Sounds like a crook bearing. It is one of the pumps that is meant to go to a fan that uses fluid to turn it, but those inlets and outlets are not used.

I've been told that a 2JZ-GE water pump fits, is this correct? Or do I need a 2JZ-GTE one? My car runs electric thermo fans.

Basically I just need the part numbers of everything I'll need to get my car up and running again before it dies on the side of the road and costs me a tow or a motor.
I had a look in Barned's thread (top thread BTW!) and he listed these parts (for a JZZ30 soarer). I might do the timing belt while I am at it. Do I need to take the crank pulley off to do the water pump? If so then I might do the crank seal while I am at it.

Does anyone know the prices (roughly) on these parts and whether they are also suitable for my JZX81 1JZ?

2jz-ge water pump does not fit 1jz-gte.

I haven't changed water pumps so that is as much as I can tell you sorry.

i had 2 threads floating around for that, one is for the guide, the other is for the gathering of parts and information.
take a look at this photo and then have a quick look at yours.

the water pump on the soarer has a discernable snout with ribs on it (the one on the left in the picture and the same as the one in the post above), the hydraulic style ones (as found on jza70's) are a much more expensive part to replace (the one on the right in the picture), so you are better off converting to the same one used as the JZZ30 also. it is the 2JZ-GTE that shares pumps with a 1JZ-GTE, not the 2JZ GE

if you convert you will need to get a pulley from somewhwere (plenty of jz's being wrecked and also can't be that expensive to have one made up i would have thought, still significantly cheaper than replacing the hydraulic assembly anyway).
have a look for the guide on how to do the 100k service, i think there is a picture of what needs to be pulled off, there are 2 covers on the front of the engine that needs to be removed to get to everything (so yes the crank needs to come off).

Rob do a search for what sort of water pump the JZX81 has on it's car (i am assuming hydraulic going from a jzx91) and see if you can find a part number just for the pulley that goes on the snout of the water pump for the jzz30.

And from memory the parts are around $400 (just under 4 months ago) including jzz30 style pump, cam and crank seals, timing belt, thermostat, timing belt pulley and accessories belt.

JZX81 pump is a hydro setup, same as the JZA70 Supra. Very complex, and has 2 versions also.

Pump = the goods. Also change the cam seals while you're at it, and throw in a new thermostat.
