Manual to Auto Hilux

Hi people

Can some one give me an indication of pricing and whats involved in changing a 99 hilux cab chassis manual to an auto???

you will need the flexplate, the auto box, maybe a tailshaft. a trans cooler would be a good idea also, that means you need lines to match.

then remove the clutch pedal and fit the larger brake pedal.

do you know if these are electronically controlled transmissions? if so then you will need an auto ECU.

now ive heard it all....changing to auto from manual ....

okay dokey, first thing first disconnect battery ( will be removing starter motor ) chock wheels and safely jack up. remove the starter motor then undo the rear tail shaft bolts and the centre bolts and drop itdown and then slide it out of the trans, fluid will probz run out the back of the trans so it would be an idea to drain it.unhook the clutch cable and remove your centre console and take the shift lever out....( im not sure what its like with hiluxs, so im giving u general instructions on how i would do it ). once lever is removed its time to remove the trans. now i duno how heavy your trans is so theres 2 ways of doing this....a trolley jack under the box or a long board under your car with a stump under each side and yeah just slowly lower it down but newayz you will work that out. once you have something under the trans undo your trans mount, 2 bolts on each side then proceed to undoing all the front trans bolts, probs about 4 on each side. once this is done lower your jack or whatever your using slightly to free the box up a bit and it should slide out, then undo your 6 fly wheel bolts and lift it off...it will be fucking heavy probably, so be careful. when you undo the bolts it will probably move so i would stick a thick screwdriver thru one of the holes up against the block so it doesnt move once that is off, fit your flex plate and then lift up your auto trans....be sure the converter is seated properly and do NOT let the gearbox hang off the motor...keep it level or you will bend the flexplate... when you slide the auto trans on be sure that the converter centre slides into the centre hole on the flexplate otherwise u will damage sumthing if you do it up when its not aligned.once you have it up against the motor bolt up the trans mountso you dont have to hold it up and fit the 2 top bolts to the front of the trans and remove the support if its flush against the box all around. fit the rest of the bolts and the starter motor. now i know nothing bout hiluxs so someone else on hear will tell you if it has a kickdown cable or electronic changing. fit the selector arm to the bottom of the shifter, you will probably have to fit a new 1 with pot rivets, bu then again i dont know how hilux levers bolt in, personally i would just geta second hand B&M shifter for 100 bucks and fit that, but your auto lever probably has overdrive etc on it. anyways onward with the conversion, your pedal box has little pins holding the pedals on with circlips on each side of the rod. remove 1 side circlip and slide bar out and your clutch pedal should fall down, do the same with your brake and fit the brake pedal then run your trans lines along from the trans to your radiator ( will have to buy an automatic radiator for the cooling line setup in them ) and buy yourself a cheap aftermarker oil cooler and read fitting instructions. if ive missed anything anyone please just add it at your own will but id say that sums it all up good luck, Dave

i was referring to dale not you, costings not my specialty, i just look around for the best price from wreckers of each part then make a wrecker-shopping list for the cheapest of each part

Do it youself its very easy, changed my sons first YN57 from auto to manual in 1 day,I managed to get a manual gearbox fromthe localpaper and then went to the local jap wreckers and asked for everything needed to convert to manual less the gearbox. It cost me around $250 for flywheel, second hand clutch in good nick, pedalbox, clutch master cyl and lines, slave cylinder rear gearbox mount and tailshaft and all the bolts. Just a day to drop the old box and bolt in the new bits and join the neutral safety switch wires together, had it all sorted in no time and no special tools required.Dont forget to get the spigot bearing for the input shaft of the gearbox.

Any mechanic should be able to do it for you, cost?? who knows, shop around a bit
