LOL @ me!
guess ill tackle it when I get to it... got a mates car to set it up with so we'll see![]()
LOL based on that question don't worry your head about the details TA-022....very simple machining involved, we took 70mm out of the rack for the KE10 and you wouldn't know it hadn't come from factory that way.

ok, i had some time this afternoon to pull the rack out and i took a few pics. it doesn't look like it has been modified. it has ER2-4 cast into the steering gear housing. if that means anything to anyone.
steve
measure how wide the main housing is.
looks vaguely like a SA63 rack I have here .....

housing end to end without arms is about 40cm then end of housing to end of steering gear housing is about 12.5cm
i am currently messing around with this commodore one, but i have widened my track a little to suit, with lots of custom bits a peices to match the commodore rear end

Hey pryorshazam,
Great work on the R&P conversion in your TA22... looks like some neat and tidy work there.
A couple of questions for you, that I'm sure a few people here will ask you more...
I'm particularly curious to know, what model Commodore did you get the rack out of, and what modifications have you made to it?
And also... have you had a chance to actually drive with it yet, if so, how are the driving characteristics (eg bump-steer, etc)?
Cheers,
3T-GTE
yup yup is it std? the rack that is? and how long till it drives?
plus that looks like its power assist? that right?

it came out of a vs model (pick and payless $70), unmodified to suit. Just tweeked and strengthened the crossmember and i have had to make custom rack ends aswell as the lower control arms.
i will eventually be plumbing the power steering into it as i have the pump and stuff, but for now the lines are just looped back on each other.
The car club im in has a wakefield trackday on the1st of july, so i am planing on testing it out there
My only concern would be bump steer, from experience i know the geometry has to be millimeter perfect it's that sensitive.
I hope it works out but for others about to try, a AE86/KE70 x-member and rack is so easy to fit why tempt fate?

hmmm
vn-vs rack is same except for different mounting points on the rack....
have a p/s ae86 x-member, rack and column if anyone wants to give that a go.
p/s rack without pump hooked up, I hope you have some guns like arnie for that track day dude![]()
Hope it's not like the subie and late model toyo PS racks either. On these the internal shaft is tiny and just controls the valves that take all the strain....with no PS hooked up you are putting all the strain thru the dangerously thin shaft ie real chance it'll snap and then no steering and hello tree. I didn't realise this on the GT8 until the engineer pointed it out![]()

the cars is on the ground now and it doesnt feel any heavier then stock just alot less turns.
I pulled it apart to see if it could be shortened when i first got it and the way it actually works is just like a normal rack without power steering, but when you turn the wheel a valve directs fluid out the apropriate line down the side of the rack then back into a hydraulic ram styled set up to assist the shafts determined direction. by just looping the lines only a little bit extra effort is used to move the fluid around, sort of like a vacume effect
