Stidnam, my plan was to cut a thickness of the bearing off the end of the TA22 housing, and weld a tube with an ID to suit the lower AE71 bearing. To stop the bearing falling out, a little thrust plate will be made up to slide over the uni-joint side of the bearing. While this is a little more complex than just using a bushing, the bearing will last a lot longer.

As for the clearance of the housing in the engine bay, we shall see.. T-motors are big things as far as 4-bangers go. I forsee issues with the bellhousing webbing :\ if the rack does indeed foul the tiniest bit, one could use a lock spacer on the RH rack end to allow the rack to move over a smidgen?

That is a ke70 crossmember just has a section taken out of the middle to match the shortened rack.

jb_22 that should work but the bearing is large compared to the 22 housing and you need to factor in how you are going to join the firewall bit that is removable at the end of the column as you will be cutting this off this way. Bit fiddly but not impossible to solve.

Yeah already realised the firewall bit is going to need modding, basically going to replicate what it already is but a slightly larger ID to fit over the bearing spigot. An extra U-shaped thrust plate will then slide over the back of the bearing and bolt to the engine side of the firewall bit to stop the column falling out. The engineer seemed to like the idea

As for "gluing" the collapseable column back together, what has everyone else done? I was just going to drill holes in the AE71 sleeve in the right spot for the divots on the lower of the TA22 shaft and fill with araldite using a syringe.

what I do and suggest is to chop the whole bell end off the ke70 column and weld it to the ta22 column. No machining needed and it's quick and easy. To adapt to the firewall use half of the plate off the firewall from the ke70 and half of the ta22 welded together.

Yeah... uhh.. all the bushing is cracked and perished and the column is rusted out, so I sorta left it alone

yes post some pics when your ready. I will take a picture of my jig that I have for you.

For reference you chop at the very start of the taper on the bell of the ke70 end.

So something equivalent to this? (in terms of steering column)

similar concept however the ke70 bell looks quite different. It looks like I might do a conversion in about 2 weeks I can post pics then

Here is some pics of how I did the steering column:

    The AE71 rack is now ~510mm end-end:

Still got to chase down new bearings, tie-rod ends, rack boots, rack bushes & still have to do the rack mounts on the TA22 crossmember.

Now the tricky part is getting it in the right place on the crossmember.. At first glance there may be issues with the 2T block fouling the rack because the pinion sits a far way inboard.. But I'll tackle that hurdle when I get to it. I have a spare 3T & TA22 crossmember to trial fit the rack to, so any progress I make I'll post pics up for.

if it's any help one of my customers used a 10mm spacer which I supplied to put under one of the engine mounts to tilt it a little

    i had a question:
Do you have any bump steer with this configuration?
My mechanic wants to change my engine front suspension Ta22 to a A21 Cefiro/laurel front suspension which from my research is basically the same front suspension as a s13 or r31 is this right?
also im verry worried it will change the way the car handles and have problems with bumpsteer as its for a totally different car.
    any comments?
also some people who do this swap to an ae86 which is similar to a ta22 celica say that the original suspension setup is better and they have problems with bumpsteer or the power steering gets harder to turn as you get to full
    advice will be appreciated
