Point noted... using a front mounted rack would probably add too much complexity to a conversion like this... unless you're already considering a dry sump that would clear it?

any other rear mounted racks people know of?

Merc, that is an option for sure.. If it all gets too hard trying to find a rack the right width. Get someone to cut the ends of the rack off and re-thread the ends of it for the inner tie rods.

That would lose some steering lock though. So have to cut the housing also I suppose if that became a problem.

That is why I think turning down the ball ends by 20mm or so , is the way to go. Eliminates having to shorten the housing, after shortening the rack. Tis better for positioning the pinion as well, otherwise you tuck the pinion close to the centre line of the car. Could be a PITA with a wide engine.

but doing that means you would have to modify any future replacement parts in the same manner. rack is the least likely to wear out, so would be best to modify this to match the shortened xmember, and then be able to use standard parts everywhere else...

My little AE82 has exceeded 400,000 kilometres, without having to change any steering components. So I would suggest the above is a mute point.

    cheers Chuck.

That's pretty lucky if you've done all those 400,000klms yourself, and you know the standard parts are still in it. Most replacement steering components involving a ball joint only come with a 40-60,000klms warranty, and I haven't seen any of my own cars reach more than 200,000 without needing at least something in the steering replaced.

The way I figure it in this conversion for a TA22, if you're already shortening the rack and the xmember, why not do them completely so you don't have to modify anything else? The less you change, the more it will act like the car it came from - completely predictable...

You guys with TA22 Xmembers can just use your stock xmember thats what the guys over here are using. Also you Corolla guys. What we do is get all AE86 Manual Rack parts: Xmember, all brackets, steering colum, mounting plate on firewall, steering knuckles ans rack of course. It's done just like Big Flea did his Corolla. I'll look for the link GREAT info on his site on the swap.

Yes great substitute since AE86 Racks are getting harder and harder to find here in the States. KP61, AE86,AE71,AW11 are all good donors BUT all need a little twitching to work.

AW11 rack is the same length as the very easy to get AE82 manual rack.

Didn't we come to the conclusion earlier that they're not the same?
