    Default engine bore

Ok guys my 5mge motor has blown a head gasket and now i have the head off i have a nice veiw of the bore, there is no lip in the bore and i can still see some hone marks but they look very polished. how can i tell if its due for a hone and some new rings?

How was the engine running prior to the blown headgasket? blowing smoke? using oil?
If in doubt I guess now is the easy time to pull the pistons out and give it a rehone.

engine seemed to run ok, its not the original motor so i dont know how many km it has done, wish i had done a compression test at some stage, before hand.

if you can see the linish marks and there is no feelable lip with your finger nail just put a gasket on and stick it back together.
Bores lasta long long time unless you cook and seize the engine or run with water in the bore for a long time.

Its not like the old days of mini mionor motors

Sounds like its not long since it has been redone or it has been very well looked after, if the cross hatching is still on the bores and the compression is fine, leave it the way it is!!!!!!

sound like it might be ok, though i did get it very hot. I might just put some new front and rear main seals in and leave it. Anybody got any ideas how to crack the bolt on the front of the crank, now the head it off

If you dont have a rattle gun put a socket and breaker bar on bolt, turn it over in the direction motor turns until breaker bar rests on chassis rail and jog the starter a couple times.

breaker bar and a sharp crack with a soft head hammer (or bolster hammer)... just make sure nut and socket are in good condition...
if you need to, you can put maybe 50-60mls of oil in one cylinder, rotate it against closed valves, adn use that to stop the engine turning over. oh.. unless the head is already off

don't do the starter motor trick with hondas..... bad idea...

you don't need to take the head off for option 2... just turn engine back the other way and oil goes out thr valve or you can suck out thru spark plug hole etc...

don't laugh.. that honda ate my sidchrome 17mm

mm, i know you can, i just dont like the idea unless i have to. gone to the databank tho for next time
bastard hondas...most sockets will break when shocked if not impact ones
i was using a "genius" socket and it got wacked 3 times on a foot long bar, with a foot to spin, didnt break. the socket or the bolt

    oh, back to on topic
in my sisters astina (which i blew the head gasket in....doo di doo ) i pulled the head off and the bore was shiney, so i was like ok. lets rebuild.
but my mechanic apprentice mate came down and was like, theres no lip, and if u get down on this level and shine the light you can see the cross haching so it doesnt need doing.
got it all back together, and i still think it should have been done, theres definately some blow by in that motor
if you want to use this motor for a while rebuild it. if your smart enough to get the head off the bottom end is childplay, and really not very expensive, especially for a commn engine like yours

Rattle gun is your best bet or unless the bolt was as tight as my 2jzgte one, which took an oxy torch and rattle gun to get off.

5mge one's are pretty easy though, mine came loose when holding the bolt with a breaker bar tryin to undo the torque converter bolts.
