its an o ring and it is a common problem.
its easy to fix just remove the dizzy and replace it. Then adjust the timing, dont forget to bridge the terminals at the check connector.
Cheers, Rob
Hi all.
Finally tracked down a mystery oil leak in my wife's 1997 SXV10 Camry with the 5S-FE.
Found the tell tale brown streak between the dizzy body and the head.
Now the questions - I guess the oil seal on the dizzy shaft is fubar?
Is this a common fault of 5S-FE engines?
Can I fix this myself at home with ordinary tools - which match the ordinary mechanic I am?
Thanks,
Mitch.

But yeah is an easy fix from memory.
It still could be the internal oil seal but do try the o ring first.

When I pulled off the cap from the dizzy, there was no oil inside, so I am hoping it is just the O ring on the shaft, and not the oil seal inside the unit. I'm not keen to buy a brand new dizzy for the sake of an O ring.

try and get a better o-ring and it will never leak againViton or silicon... same size.. prolyl cost $2 vs 30c, but they won't harden in the heat....
at bearing shop, they might even have listing.. but if you take in dizzy, they should be able to match the size (esp if the old seal is on there so you know outer diameter after crush)
but new nitrile (black) will last a couple of years anyway...
