    Default 2jz gasket question

I have just enquired on the price of a complete gasket set for the 2jzge and bugger me if I couldn't pickup another complete engine for that price !!!

I haven't ever rebuilt a "high tech" engine before so Im entering new territory here.

My question is, are the majority of these gaskets reusable ?

Are there any safe alternatives to some of these gaskets like specialised sealants etc that anyone can recomend ?

I would really like to rebuild the engine for piece of mind but the $$ factor needs to ad up.

    Cheers, Tim

    Tim,
the inlet and exhaust manafold gaskets are steel shim and normally can be reused, but a new headgasket, for a 2JZGTE they are still avail from toyota so i would assume they are for a 2JZGE. Turbo gasket is around the 280 mark from memory, or get a cometic one. For the rest use a good automotive sealant rtv or similar.

    Thanks Trav +rep for you.

I was hoping for an answer along those lines.
My brother can get automotive bits and pieces cheap but a complete gasket kit is still $600!! although it does include front and rear main seals, valve stem seals etc but hey the whole 2j was still only around $600.

do you really want to do valve stems? start it up. wait. rev. if no smoke, leave valve stem seals
Front and main rear aren't a bad idea tho, especially with the gbox off and engine out

The engine is well and truly out, I wanted to rebuild it before it goes in the ma61, it has less than 100k on it though so its probably not needed.
I will be pulling the head off to do some minor porting and to inspect everything though so I was considering doing the lot.

To be honest that doesnt sound to bad a price for the gaskets.
Ive almost finished putting a 2JZGTE together for a custom, with pretty much most things done, and from memory the head gasket was 280ish, valve stem seals where 230ish, and then still had to buy the viton front/rear main seals, and cam seals, plus waterpump and oil pump o-rings etc etc.

If I were you, I'd be pulling it all apart and looking at the gaskets. Quite often i've reused a few of them and used a little smear of silastic.
If you have some that are definetly not, I've had success with making new ones out of gasket paper, or if that's not going to cut it, just get genuine ones for those.

As for seals, remove them and take them to a bearing shop and save yourself hundreds of dollars. Most of Toyotas seals are made by NOK, and Toyota will sell you them with a massive markup.

The exhaust gaskets are reusable. The intakes strictly speaking are not but Silastic is a helpful tool.

The engine will be up to 12 years old (you can tell from the date on the spark leads) so if the head is apart, I would replace the valve stem seals.

Toyota VRS for a 2JZGE was about $480 trade when I bought one years ago.
