Ahh yes, the "easy-access" ones, rather than the "stuck-next-to-the-very-hot-header-pipes-and-bloody-impossible-to-get-to!!" filter.

They're not actually that easy to get to in the ST205... you've got to remove one of the splashgaurds to get to it.
I'd rather burn my hands a bit than have to remove the splashgaurds anyday!

But then I'll be using the Gen3 sump whenever I get around to finishing this engine... I'll just have to do something about the splashgaurd thing.

Some engines have a filter bypass valve so if the oil filter becomes totally blocked, the valve opens to avoid loss of oil pressure. Better dirty oil at good pressure than no oil circulating at all.

I'm not at all familiar with S series engines, but could the filter bypass be stuck open? Assuming the 3SGTE has one?

I got my remote filter kit for a 3sgte from rampage, they have them on the shelf all the time wasnt all that expensive from memory. $100ish

The hoses they sold me for oil were crap lasted about 20,000km then go mushy and exploded

get some good hose (industrial stuff) and the better clamps (t bolt ones are they called?)
or better yet get a proffesional made set.

Personally I would rather burn my hands changing the filter then have a remote setup in my car but the sway bar is in the way of the filter, at least at the moment anyway.

    Cheers,
to my knowledge there is no such valve in a 3S? its more likely the drainback valve has either failed or wasnt there in the first place... and sitting there with three weeks (after only driving 500Km) im not suprised theres no oil in it...

i wouldn't worry about it dude, if oil wasnt getting to ur filter, you'd show zero oil pressure on your guage, and the guages are supposed to fluctuate, the higher the revs the more oil pressure

Sorry but this is a load of s***e. Lack of oil will not blow a head gasket.

As you mentioned, lack of oil can cause bearing failure/cam journals, yes. Full on seizure of the motor too.

I agree that the filter being without oil after shutdown isn't ideal, but it isn't the end of the world. I have changed 1000s of oil filters, and enough of those were empty when removed. Never saw these cars have engine problems.

well.. temperature increase due to increased friction because of the lack of oil circulation could result in a head gasket failure i suppose.. so its not a load of crap, its just unlikely

Pretty much all oil filters have a bypass valve and anti drain back valve... just varied levels of quality and positioning.
The bypass valve works best at the highest point on the filter so exact location varies depending on where / how the filter is to be mounted.
In the case of the ST185 vs ST205 one points up (ST185) and one points down (ST205) but they require the same filter so one of them has the ABV in a less than ideal position... Still have to pull one apart to work out which one is in the wrong spot.
