    Default Spigot bearing installation Problems?!

Hi guys I'm having a silly issue with fitting the spigot bearing into my 86kw flywheel. It wont fit in!

I have the bearing here, part no: 6001-2RSH. its an SKF. Is this the correct bearing?i was pretty positive it was, but it seems to not want to fit.

To make the installation (or so i thought)i tried a couple of little tricks: I put the bearing in the freezer for the night and i also quickly heated up the flywheel with the heatgun, so it would hopefully all slide in together nicely.

Note:I used a socket the size of the outer race and tapped it in.

    So anyone know what's up?
Have i got the wrong bearing, or am i doing something wrong?

    thanks in advance,

    NTN part number is: NTN6001LLBC4/2A

Which is 28mm OD 12mm ID and 8mm thick.

RS shows the 6001-2RSH as being those dimensions but with a double rubber seal.

So you have the right one, or an equivalent.

From your photo it looks like you have installed it off center though, and so its fouling as the diagonal diameter is larger than it is when square.

you have to press bearings in square, and you need to heat the WHOLE flywheel up for it to expand. Put the flywheel in the oven and heat it to about 120 degrees.

actually, don't do that, take it out again, polish the hole up a little, smear a light film of oil on it, and try again. it 's not supposed to be so tight in there.

Ok, That's annoying. I've already torqued/loctited the flywheel bolts up.

I'm pretty sure i've stuffed the bearing up that is half in there atm. So i will get that.

but surely there's another way to fitting it..

also the bearing will last ten times longer if you pack it with some grease. bearings are packaged with a small amount of 'brinelling' grease only, which is only meant to prevent the bearings from rattling and vibrating in transport.

they flick out easy with something like a small screwdriver, or a scriber. pack it with grease (whatever, i use APXT blue grease, or you could use EPL2) then just push them back in with your fingers. easy.

it's pretty easy to straighten them. if you still have doubts, put that side of the bearing inwards, that way if it comes off it won't end up in the clutch, and the grease can't get out into the clutch either. you can leave it off, but if you do i'd pack the hole in the crank with a little bit of grease too.

Doesnt the spigot bearing press into the crankshaft not the flywheel?

it does look like you have put it in off centre.
try and remove it and see if there are any score marks in the hole

yeah it does. I knew what he meant

Yeah it went in on an angle. I got it out and there is a little score. I will clean up the hole and try the bearing again with a bit of grease and some more heat.

haha yeah, my bad, but you get the idea. on second thought, if you're gonna do that, which you really shouldn't need to, you will probly need to remove the main rear seal, or you'll burn it with the oxy torch.

Give the inside of the crank a quick sand with some wet and dry, 300 - 600 grit to remove any rust build up that may have occurred, it could be making it hard to get it in

If you want to get the old (and now) stuffed bearing out, you can hydraulic it.

To do this pack in behind with grease, then get a drift or rod that will fit neatly through the hold and smack it a few times with a hammer. You may need to repack the grease a couple of times as the bearing starts to come out.

Just get a new Bearing, they are like $5......

You can then re-pack it with grease, but put the cover back on it otherwise you may get grease thrown onto the clutch disc which won't be good for Friction........

And like has already been said, clean the bore up well, put it in the oven set @ Max temperature for 1 hour, then use one of your Fingers to hold/position/slide the Bearing into place, and have some long nose pliers on hand to hold it down in place as you slide your finger out.

Removing the crank putting that in the oven to fit a spigot bearing?
Sounds like too much hard work, if it doesnt go in relatively easily you are doing something wrong. Applies to most things - cars, electronics, computers, wo...

Are you sure you havent left the outer race from the old spigot bearing in there?

The race from spigot bearings dont seperate overly easily from the casing. Infact they are machined such that the inner race + outer race + ball bearing > bearing thickness, hence no falling apart.

Anyway, just give the inside a nice sand, chuck the new bearing in the freezer overnight and then pop it in square. Youll find it easier to tap in with a dowel or a piece of wood to square it up, and the last bit you shoudl tap in with the old bearing to set it down nicely.
