Ohhh that would've helped me! I took my dash out, got the guage bolted in, got the pressure sender in and then couldn't work out the wiring so i gave up
Hopefully i can use this info/my guage in another TA22 one day tho

folks, FWIW you can buy a VDO gauge sender from a T18 for this setup
    the part number is 231.084
it costs $9 bucks so i wouldn't even bother with one from a wrecker
the sender suits 76 onwards celica, t18 and corona.

EDIT 24/10/2009 - apologies 231.084 is not correct.

    Going to try a Tridon TPS-005 sender from a Toyota Celica RA40R, 4, 2.0L, Eng code: 18R-C, 1/11/1977 - 1/10/1981

    more information for all those who care ;

whats interesting is the gauge works on heat believe it or not. the sender grounds out and provides resistance which heats up a metal strip inside the gauge which causes the needle to move. the more resistance created the more the gauge will move)

The temp gauges for both oil & water work that way, but how would that work on a pressure gauge? When you first start the engine and it's cold you get your pressure reading, and the reading stays the same when the engine is hot - which implies it is not dependant upon temperature.

Furthermore, when the revs vary on an engine the oil pressure goes up and down (with the revs) and I can't see how there would be temperature variances causing the pressure gauge to move under these circumstances.

I would assume the pressure sender would have a small hole where oil gets in and pushes a diaphram which in turns moves some form of potentiometer which varies the resistance to earth, which is then interpreted by the gauge to provide the indicative pressure.

In need of assistance ASAP, I am installing the GT oil/amp gauge and need someone to tell me what my wires correspond to, I have one solid yellow, one yellow with white stripe, one yellow with black stripe, This is from a '75 LT.

    Cheers & thanks in advance

    Scott,

The Yellow/Black wire is the signal from the oil pressure sender (which you will have tapped into the engine block after removing the oil pressure switch).

The Yellow/White wire is the signal from the alternator which would have powered the CHG idiot light in the original guage. Its no use to you any more.

The Yellow wire is the power feed to the oil pressure guage.

Just wondering Mick where does the negative come from to get the gauge working, I was thinking it came from the regulator ( which I think is the Yellow/White wire ) correct me if I am wrong.

The negative wire on the 4 pin plug is from the same source as the other gauges. Pretty much they all join to a common earth. This is the white/black wire.

Okay but Scott does not have the white/black wire, I think in place of this wire is the Yellow/white wire which I think still goes to regulator. To act as an earth.

I have never seen how the wires connect into the idiot light guage but would suggest Scott is better to connect the Yellow/White wire (from the Oil/Amp guage earth connection) into the dash harness earth strap (White/Black). There are several spare earth connections close by on the dash harness to do this.

This will at least ensure that the oil pressure guage function is not influenced by the alternator/voltage regulator performance.

    Thanks Mike, Rosey & Simon.

Got it all worked out now. I'm taking a break from it now and will finish installing it in the morning.

    Cheers
