If I cant get a Drum Cover off by just Twisting and pulling off by fingers, i just give it a phew taps with a hammer or mallet around the sides to loosen it up, it usually works everytime.

Tools are EVERYTHING. I remember the first T series rear end I was doing (needed centre taken out also) so I needed to pull the axles out. 1 came out fine, the other.. literally 3hrs of everything I tried it wouldnt come out. And i mean EVERYTHING>Originally Posted by takai
After hitting it with a sledge for 25min I got some rope. Tied it around the axle, the other around the other side of the rear end, then tied one side to my van and the other to my hachi. And guess what happened? I actually started to pull my ae86 with the ropes and the t series being elevated mid-air by the tension. I dragged the car about half a metre and gave up.
Eventually went out and got the proper tools![]()

Another way to make an axle puller is find an old axle, knock the studs out,Slide a piece of pipe over the axle then weld some handles to the axle and viola you have your very own genuine Toyota axle puller. As for getting brake drums off just give the front face of the drum a few hard taps around the face which should dislodge all the dust and crap and it should basically slide straight off.
Cheers Brett.
just a note axles can be really really stuck in if theyve not ever been out. we tried everything on my mates mk11 escort axles (sorry not toyota) n they still wouldnt. we ended up getting the dingo with a chain wrapped around the end of the axle and attached to the bucket then another chain wrapped around the other end of the diff housing and to a big tree to yank it out. STILL WOULDNT COME OUT!
so back went the dingo and out came the bobcat. same thing as with the dingo but much more force obviously. took 5 full power pulls to get it out. be careful but. the axle came out so fast i didnt even see it n flew into the bucket. very easily coulda got me.![]()
God i love being a redneck
my axle puller ive got now is roughly 2 inch dia steel pipe at 2.5m long with many many bits of scrap steel welded to the slider for weight. with handles of course. welded a plate to one end of the pipe then flattened and hooked the other end to hold the axle. works a treat.
cheers

(ps i sudjest having a front gaurd on the bobcat if using one.)![]()

i think that everyone that had trouble getting the drum off the axle just forgot to take the handbrake off!![]()
..seriously, i've never had trouble getting one off, they just slide off easy with a hand tap and a jerk.
beer me!
Hope this digram will help with this thread
You're probably right, i more than likely didn't consciously make an effort to check it was off, probably just rocked up when the car was already parkedOriginally Posted by joecoolmk2
