Another important tip that others have missed is the you should NEVER lift off when cornering hard. You will spin the car.

i've never heard of anyone using lead, i too would be intrigued to hear if/how it would go...

like you say, one would think it may be a bit too soft though...

When welding up the spider gears, firstly cut two rectangles of steel (about 5mm thick) that will sit neatly into the spider gears from each side but dont make them too small so as to fall through. Then weld around the spider gears and to the rectangles of steel. The weld will produce a stronger bond to the mild steel plate than the spider gears. The plate with the weld around the outside will lock the gears, even if the weld didnt make a good bond to the gears themselves.

Try to keep the heat down by welding a section then letting it cool completely before welding the next part. This is to reduce damage to the rest of the diff.

A company called "Arrow Diffs" or something similar used to advertise in a few car mags (Zoom etc), and poured aluminium into the hemisphere to lock open centres. they claimed some sort of guarantee for the process also.

Agree with jonra23 about clamping the earth from the welder to the hemisphere to avoid completing the electrical circuit through the bearings, i've had one farked like this

Make sure you stuff wet rags in the splines, its a real bitch to get spatter out of them sometimes.

    Good luck!

Rather than the piece of steel wedge mentioned above. Stick weld with hardfacing rods between one side of the gears, then rotate hard against this and weld the other side. This will provide by far the hardest surface to resist wear/movement and then either stick or mig in the regular way. Just build up enough hard face to start with.

Facing rods are ued to rebuild edges on graders/digger buckets etc so they wear really well.

i think im going to be welding another diff in the next week.. i might take some pics so you guys can critique my work

last time i just took the back plate off, gave it a good degrease, heated it up with the MAPP gas burner (LPG would work fine too) which set fire to some stuff but other than that was fine.. then just welded ass out of it, big fat beads, i probably could have done a better job but i didn't want to take the centre out i figured if i put big enough fillets into it, even if the weld cracks, its not going to turn

Im with 18rc turbo, plus any floating bits are going to do ugly stuff to crown and pinion gears.

    it was in a KE55

it was only a sh!tter anyway..

dude.. we are talking about welding up a diff here.. its not something i would do to a 'nice' car... any diff with a fully locked centre is going to be really hard on axles.. welding a diff centre is not really a long term solution for an everyday driver.. and i wouldn't do it to something that was going to cost me big money to replace.. thats why my hilux has a 'lokka' and it was put in by a workshop (it did also get a full rebuild at the time too)
