    Default total newbie questions!!

    hi guys,
well at the moment i am putting a 1ggte into a 4wd hilux.. with some help from a mate who has put a 7mgte in his.. Im only 17 so and havent had much to do with turbo engines at all!!
so some questions for you all,
twin turbos.. can i put a blow off valve on it? (im 99% sure u can) so the next question is how? or can someone show me a diagram of where i need to plumb it into?
also wat size exhaust should i run? and do i need a catback? (or wat eva they are called!! lol)
also wat is the deal with the boost u run? e.g standard seems to be 9psi.. how do u get it to run 15psi etc? do u have to tune it to do that?
thanks for any replies i get to these gay questions!! lol
    cheers,
    rollsy

    1. yeah u can run a BOV.. not sure about the location, i.e. before intercooler, after intercooler, closer to intake etc all make a difference but yeh where the two intake pipes become one.. (from the turbo)
    2. sorry can't help u with the diagram but yeh u get the picture
    3. exhaust size.. is up to you.. i'd think 2.5" or 3" dumps sounds right.. not too familiar with the 1G.. standard dump pipes join up to exhaust pipe which runs under car.
    4. cat back is the exhaust system from the cat backward. All street legal cars have them, and i think what u mean is a bigger system? should be alright just becareful it doesn't get too loud or u'll be in trouble with EPA.
    5. Increased boost.. u could do it with a boost controller from the wastegate actuator valves vacuum line

    hope that helps

Ok, BOV will work fine, you can either run two, just after the turbos (one on each) or run one BOV (after the intercooler?) where both pipes become one, just trace it back from the intake manifold.

Exhaust size: I'd run between 2.5 and 3 inch, from the turbo back. Cat-back refers to the catalytic converter in the vehicle (won't have one if it's pre-1985/was a diesel), and a 'cat-back' is a cheap upgrade exhaust which ony replaces after the cat converter. In your case, run a whole new exhaust, from the dump pipes back.

To run more than stock boost, you need some form of boost controller. These come in all different ways, shapes and forms, from a simple bleed valve (cheap and not great), to a full stand-alone Electronic Boost controller (about $500ish for a decent one), which will build your desired boost faster, and sit rock-solid on your setting (bleed valves can 'spike' boost pressure) Depending on how far the factory fuel map goes, is how far you can take the boost pressure. Also, if it's the factory turbos, I beleive they self-destruct over about 14psi.

For your conversion, I'd seriously be looking at an aftermarket ECU. It'll save all the wiring hassles of trying to get the factory ECU to work, and give you more power and much easier upgradeability later on down the track. Far and away worth the price (you can get a good 2nd hand one from Ebay for $700ish, or a brand new, all wired up and tuned, for 2k)

bov shoudl basically be just before intake, after intercooler
but i doubt u need one. im not running one on my 1g
the exit from the turbos is 2.5" i then run 3" pipe all the way thru
get yourself a good ebc to control your boost but if u want it to be good go big single rather than the pissy twins

    hi guys,
how loud do u thing my motor will be if i run 2 1/2 inch pipe straight from the turbo dumps through a sports muffler of some type (notsure which one) then out the side of my hilux a bit before the rear tyre.. so the whole thing will only be about 1.5m long i guess.. I only want to run it like this for a couple of months till i can afford to get one made properly.. but i dont wont it to be insanely loud either!!!
    cheers

the exhaust system is basically made up of these components:
    Headers -> Turbos -> dump pipes -> catalytic converter -> pipe 1 -> muffler -> pipe2 -> tip

Tip is optional and is only for show or noise. Muffler I suggest using a sports item, fibreglass packed is best. dump pipes should be as large as possible as this is where the gas is most expanded. Catalytic converter is required for EPA, and should again be as large as possible as it is a big restriction. pipe 1 should be a size down from the dump pipe, or you will get a hollowy droney crappy sound. pipe 2 should be either same or again one size smaller than pipe 1 for the same reasons. Tip should not be much larger than the pipe, or it will get a crap sound.

With a system as you described, plus cat converter, it will have a good solid sound, not be too restrictive, and pass EPA requirements.

Brett_celicacoupe has a good sounding system hanging off his 1GGTE (coppas dont look at him due to noise, and it passes EPA) which he welded up himself, using XF falcon cat converter, and I believe no muffler. turbos reduce noise when not opened out to a 10" WRX pipe.

thats correct, turbos are a muffler in themselves, hence why you can run cannons and they dotn sound ghey like they do on n/a cars
i hvae a large muffler and the system is still loud, but gets quieter as the revs rise and is drowned out by turbo noise muahahaha!

Here is a comprehensive link to modification of intake gear to suit a bosch BOV on a 1ggte written by Phil Strong. There is also info bout making a boost kit, bleed valve setup. Hope this helps.

thanks for the replies guys!! sounds like it should be okay to run the system i want to run for a while but i might just try running a catalytic conveter instead of a muffler.. and see what its like.. if its to loud i will just put a muffler in as well..
and also thanks for that link thomasbl!

Probably polished aluminium or stainless steel. Polish the buggery out of them. If you want the ultra chrome look, get them chromed, but it costs quite a bit. For every kilo of metal you want chromed, look at $100ish.

If you really want shinyshiny, get some good TIG welded intake plumbing made up, it'll help the flow over the facco stuff, mean you can put a good cooler in there, and *sigh* look pretty
