if you still have the thermostat lying around punch the guts out of it and put it back in.
what can happen is that you get too much flow and the water doesnt stay in the rad as long as it would if it was restricted
this then causes the water not to cool as much resulting in higher temps.
wih a restrictor in, it will stay in the rad longer therefore cooling it more.

then you can drive in wa summer heat without feeling like your in a sauna with the frikin heater on.

    cheers

have you removed the undertray from the engine bay? this will also affect the efficiency of the radiator as it disrupts airflow thru the engine bay (and thus thru the radiator).

Thankyou Linden, I didnt think about it that way...

i havent yet chuckster. i will today

Yesterday i put a Davis Craig 12" or 14" electric fan on the radiator.
I hooked it up to ACC to its ALWAYS on with a relay giving it the power from the batt.

This has made the cresta stay at half way temp non stop (40 mins of driving) without rising
i believe these engines have/always will run hot.

If it overheats with the davis craig fan on there. im going to get the radiator cleaned professionally by NATRAD in perth.

its about 25"deg in perth today, just drove from GF's house to Perth city and outta perth city to home , didnt go past half way again !
