Default what is better for AE86, Tokico HTS or KYB AGX

i know this is an failry open ended question, and the only real way to tell is to try both shocks on the same car, but the reason i ask is i always planned to run AGX due to me imagining they were cheaper to get than the tokico HTS shocks.

now i have finally decided which AGX shocks i want it turns out that there is very little price difference between them.

so which one is better? anyone used both?

EDIT: intended use is street, circuit and drift.

HTS102s are very good, but im pretty sure they have been discontinued. So you may be stuck with the AGXs.

takai, i know they are discontinued, but as i have found out recently, you can still get them from various sources.

    dave, have you used both?

i'm a bit concerned about the rear droop, as i don't want to "slam" my car. the AGX i have picked have longer travel than the 102s, pretty much what i want on the rear. they are just a lot more expensive than i thought.

    keep it coming!

    Will,

As you know, I run the HTS102's in my car.

They are very very good shocks and i am very happy with them.

Now as you know, my sprinter has been a lowered and these shox suit my ride height quite well.

They are extremely short stroke though, so perhaps not really good for your intended ride height.

Perhaps you should come for a ride in my car and eperience what the differing levels of adjustment provide with my spring rate of 8f/6r.

You could then organise a ride in Hen's car to see the same shox with a 7f/5r spring rate. I have found what has an effect on the perception of rudeness in ride per shock is also the amount of rattling and banging that goes on in the car. Just need to know this as the rates in my car are harder, but appear smoother than Hen's because his car makes a lot more noise. Although i know this has nothing to do with the way the shock and rate perform.

102's are only for lowered cars ie 110mm - 130mm clearance

otherwise youll be at the top of the stroke too often and your bound will be ok but the rebound will suffer

i have 102's qith 8f/6r kg/mm springs - quite good on track - not so good on sydneys roads

    food for thought

Vote 1 Koni! I've got them on my AW11, and they're just excellent.

cheers jezz, forgot you had them for a moment.

the front i'm not really worried about, as you know you can put the useful travel anywhere by the use of spacers and cut and shutting. the rear however is a bit more difficult, not impossible but it means you need to move either the top of bottom shock mount - not so easy!

might get t5he AGXs just "to be different" and then i can compare to you and hen's car, answer my own question.

cheers for the tip mullet, but im having enough trouble picking between two tyes of shock, decided i didn't wnat konis a while back for a number of reasons.

Jaz has already said most of what I would add to this discussion.

The adjustment is very wide. I can go from superdamped and hard to all spring using only around 70% of the adjustment.

And as for ride height, my car is lowered 50mm (or there abouts) at the rear and there seems to be no problem with topping out.

However I feel that both shocks would be good for what you want to do. Don't stress too much over the exact choice.

What would be the choice if the car was never to be driven on the road and was track only?

out of these two, i;d say HTS but it really depends on the tracks.

for a track car, i would be spending more than 1000 bucks on shocks, and would probably get something valved to suit.

The HTS102s in my IPRA car do admirably, and are really quite good for the price i paid for them.

Just a quick question. To those who have fitted the 102s what is the free height of your rear springs (I know this will vary with rate)?

My rear springs have a free height of 190mm. This is with an 6kg/mm spring rate given for a 250kg corner weight.

Needless to say, my car is to the weeds.
