    right
since my timing is now out, any suggestions?
it's got a new crank timing pulley, new tensioner, and initially the timing was perfect.
After a very hard run, the belt has slipped a gear.
I remember thinking when I installed it "gee, that belt isn't as tight as I expected".. tight, but not *tight*. is it possible the tensioner was installed incorrectly (somehow)
something else I noticed... the tensioner I removed had a "1" on it, and the new on had a "2" on it (or maybe it was the other way around).. but I assumed these were batch numbers, as the (usually reliable) guys at CH toyota assured me it was the right part.
There are no secrets to installing a tensioner that I missed? screw in, remove pin, ???, profit?

you might not have got the right tension on it or it was not tight and slipped back{idler pulley}.
Do it again and make sure you have it tensioned with a dirty big screw driver when you tighten it! ID say it didnt have the right tension on it or the belt had slack in between the cam pulleys etc.

I presume you took all the slack out of the timing belt (making the non tensioner side tight) so when you let the tensioner go it takes up all the available slack.

I replaced my timing belt and its been fine and i didn't replace the tensioner as there was nothing wrong with it.

    Cheers

tensioned with a screwdriver what now?
And yeah, I made sure the slack was on the tensioner side.
I guess I'll just do it again, more anally, and hope.
'cause I sure as hell dont want to remove the crank pulley again

long as its minumal deflection of the belt between the cam pulleys and on slack side you will be right, you might have had a tooth or so of slack the first time!
just take your time, you will be right!

mick - no manual tensioner (thus no screwdriver)

its a gas filled pressure based idler... greg - is it in good condition? needs replacing?

well, here's what they look like.
they aren't as perfect as initial installation, but nor are they a tooth out. this is at exactly TDC

    looks ok to me...

belt will stretch a little and that exhaust cam will back off a touch

what kind of movement/deflection can you get in the length of belt leading up to the exhaust cam (in mm per 'big push')

    cheers

oh, and have you removed the retainer pin from the tensioner after installation (thus letting the piston pop out of the gas chamber and therfore tensioning the pulley)

I kinda can't access that bit of belt, due to middle timing cover being in place
and yeah, on a 2nd look in the light they look ok. I'm going to check and see if the tensioner screws have come loose, then I'll move on to checking ignition (symptoms were of bad timing, but I guess it's possible I've dropped a cylinder)
