Default Help: ta22 reverse light wiring

Hey team, got pretty much all the wiring sorted in my ta22 but I'm have issues with my reverse/back up lights.

Bought the car as a rolling body with no engine or gearbox and I'm now running a w55 gearbox with a 2pin reverse switch, have checked the switch on the gearbox and I'm getting a circut when in reverse position.

I grabbed the wiring with plugs (that run between gearbox and dash) out of my ra23 as the ta22 was missing this. when I tried it on the ta22 my park lights come on instead of the reverse lights, I realise that the plugs between the ra23 and ta22 maybe different so can anyone confirm which plug located underneath the dash I should be running the gearbox off of? Can get pics tomorrow when there's some decent light if need be.

At the moment I'm at a loss as there are multiple unused plugs in my dash loom that im guessing are for ac etc but I don't want to start hooking into them and burning stuff out.

Any help would be much appreciated as I'm by no means an auto electrician haha.

    Cheers
    Matt

I have no idea on the wiring on the ta22, but easiest way I can think of in your case would be to apply 12 volts to the wire right at the taillight assembly for the reverse lights ( so you are back feeding the power supply ) & then with a test light see which wire has power at the plugs you are talking about ..

Why not look up the TA23 wiring diagram and the TA22 wiring diagram and check for the difference. I know that andrewzuku has both on this site and it should be easy to find.

Cheers mate, yeah ill have a look for a ta23 wiring diagram on here, ive got a ta22 one in my workshop manual but it doesnt show where the plug is located just that reverse lights run to the switch and are red/light purple stripe wire from the tail light itself.

I just thought id check on here first incase it was just a case of someone specifying the wiring/connector i can hook the reverse switch into under the dash, 1st gen celicas are rare over here so i dont have the luxury of a spare car and im unable to go check out someone elses ta22 as i dont know anyone in the south island of new zealand with a ta22 haha.

Appreciate the help guys ill keep hunting with my volt metre

    Matt,

If you have the light switch hooked up do the reverse lights come on when you pull the light switch on?

If so you will have to swap individual connectors in the multiplugs under the dash.

There is a two pin connector beside steering box in engine bay which the switch connects to. Both wires should be Red/ Light blue tracer.

    Hi Mike,

The reverse lights dont come on when the main light switch is pulled.

I tried Lexsmaz's suggestion, i thought i found the right connector and wired that up but to no avail.

at this stage ive just found an unused connector under the dash that has 12v when the ignition is on i test wired the reverse switch to that and then ran a wire back to the tail light connector behind the back seat and that worked when i engaged reverse so if all else fails ill just wire into the reverse wire that runs through the car and up into the dash before it goes into the main loom.

    Cheers

When you ran a power wire to the rear lights & you got power to the plug under the dash, did the power wire under the dash stop if you unplugged the power wire from the back lights as that is the only way to tell that its the actual wire & if the power stopped its the correct wire, but I'm now suspecting you haven't got 12 volts to the switch on the gearbox itself as that's how it works you need 12 volts to one side of the switch which could come from anywhere but needs to be fused & the other side as you found then goes to possibly inside the car & then connects to that wire you found under the dash that powers up when you back feed the wire at the rear if that wire actually works as I stated above ..

This is the plug I was looking for, was hidden under the brake brake booster, wouldn't have even thought to look there, figured it would be under the dash.

Problem solved, cheers for all the suggestions and help!
