Default 1jzge water temp sensor location.

Have a 1j in an MA61. The temp gauge (amongst a lot of other things) has never been hooked up as far as I'm aware. I do have wiring diagrams, but, I'm buggered if I can find the actual temp sensor on the engine. Anyone point me in the right direction ?

    Any help appreciated,

    Trevor

On a 1JZGTE Motor its on the curved Alloy top outlet pipe as it comes out of the head, ( and you would think in a similar location on a 1JZGE motor ) its the pipe which then connects to the top radiator hose, it will be a single flat male fitting on the sensor & on the GTE motors it has the 2 pin plug below it for the ECU temp sensor ..

Thanks for the reply lexsmaz, but, still buggered if I can see it, taking in to consideration I'm a bit thick. Just went and had a look in the general area you said and still can't see anything. This motor is a vvti if that makes any difference. Would you have or could you suggest somewhere to find a pic of the temp sensor ? I've scoured the internet for no result.

On the GTE VVTI motors they still have the sensors in the same location, later VVTI motors may run the temp gauge through the Engine ECU sensor ?? or even pick it up off the ECU ?? can you find any sensors on the pipe I'm talking about, the sensors will be down near where it mounts to the head, so not staring you in the face ..

That may be right. Might have to go to an auto electrician to sort it all out.

I just had another look and I can't see any sensors. The top radiator hose connects to a pipe that runs into the head and there's nothing on it. Can't even see a thermostat housing. It's all a bit of a mystery.

I googled it & could not find much either, but there was a pic of I think a 2JZGE ? motor & it looked to be at the back of the head, basically between the two cam covers, past the No 6 spark plug ..

The thermostat is in the housing where the bottom radiator hose attaches to the block ..

Can't find anything between the cam covers. I'll just have to get an auto elec to fix things. The temp gauge isn't the only thing that needs hooking up. Wiring sort of always confuses me. Thanks for your help. Appreciate it.

No worries, strange that its a different location from the GTE motors, once you find the sensor its very easy to then run a wire back to the gauge but your call & your Auto electrician is going to have to look for the sensor too, which time is money so hopefully it wont take him long to find it .. My suggestion is to just keep looking around the head area of the motor looking for a single wire sensor that may or may not have a wire coming off it & if you find it take a pic & post it up so we can see it ....

What did the motor come out of ?? as a 1JZGE is pretty rare I think ?

Yeah no point paying someone to find something that isn't lost. It's got to be there somewhere. I was pretty busy this arvo so tomorrow I'll jack the front up, get underneath and see if I can find it that way cause I sure as hell can't find it looking from above. madmont says his is under the inlet manifold so mines got to be there somewhere.

I'm led to believe the motor is an import from a JZX100 Chaser Tourer S, series 2. It's a really nice cruiser with that motor in it and gets way better k's to the litre than the 5me in my other one. Goes good. Probably go better with everything hooked up.

I recon it doesn't have a sensor and everything goes thru canbus wiring
Just get a temp sensor to suit ma61 and fit it in an easy to get to spot
And wire it to the yellow green wire in the plug behind the glovebox

Haven't had time to check things out until today. Stuck the video camera in the general area and found the green thing which is what I believe to be the temp sensor. Thing is it has a wire or wires connected that from what I can work out go to the ecu.

    temp sensor.jpg

I'm assuming the temp sensor is in fact working, it's just the gauge isn't.

So, if I find the wire that goes from the temp gauge in the cluster, where is it supposed to go ?

    Please be gentle.

As you said that's the ECU coolant sensor, you need to look for another single wire sensor it should be in the same area & if definitely no other sensor is there then the gauge could have been fed off from the ECU after getting the signal from this Sensor you have pictured ..

I would contact madmont to see if his had a separate temp sensor sender & if not I would do as dumbass said & just put one in the top hose, you can buy those after market metal sleeves & put a temp sensor in it & just cut the hose to fit the sleeve ..

Assuming that your engine is from a JZX100, then it should be 83420 on the below image...

Part number should be, 83420-16040, and it should look like the below image...

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if your engine was from something else (more modern) where the Coolant temperature signal was / is sent to the dash via serial data (over Toyota's Multiplex network) as opposed to having a discrete temperature sensor.
