Default 1G-GTE HKS head gasket.. worth it???

Hi guys, just after your opinions...

Everything is comming together now, the bits will be here soon asnd the rebuild will commence.....

    basic specs:

    fully rebuilt 1G-GTE rev 3

new crank, balanced with the crank pulley and lightened flywheel block surface prepped, block honed new rings etc etc, shot peened and balanced rods..... ported polished and gasflowed head with re profiled valves

its not mega modified (funds!) but it should all be nicely put together I have fresh rebuilt turbos that were lightly breathed on by teh gods at turbo technics and I aim to run tehm at about 1 bar, with a 1. 2 bar scrable setting on the AVC-R, fueling and cooling is sorted too...

The question is, is it worth going for an HKS metal headgasket? or shall I stick with stock Toyota???

    Your opinions and views please

    stock toyota
over here its at least 200 dollars cheaper than the HKS one.
stradlater, for one is using a bog stock motor and runnng 25 pound thru it and having no issues.
and im yet to here of anyone having consistent headgasket issues.

the main issue people have when using a stock graphite composite gasket is that if there is a little detonation you tend to blow the sides out of them, but a good tune should eradicate this.
and also, from my understanding the toyota gasket is metal around the cylinders isnt it?

can i also asked, what does a stock flywheel weigh and how much have you had yours lightened by?

Good point, you don't really hear of 1Gs popping headgaskets for fun...

The HKS one I have seen I can get for about US$ 120 , (I already have a stocker, but someone has said he'll buy it of me, and its $120 to make up the difference between the two, which is not MEGA bad)

Yes the stock ones have metal inner rings..

Money is tight.... so its probably not worth it.... but it would be an extra $120.... which I think sia good price for one of them.... aarrrggg I can't make my mind up lol

Chances are I'll have to pay import tax on it too (they can post fora lower value, but obviously if it gets bent/damaged in transit, teh shipping insurance can only cover the lower value!!)

The 1G doesn't have a problem blowing HG's UNLESS it's been sitting around a while. This is what I've found. Personally, I'm going to be using another factory HG with uberG.

There are guys here putting doing all sorts of big power mods to 1G all on a factory HG (its kind of funny owning a 7M and not typing "B" in front of HG) people are nearing the 400rwhp mark and other things are letting go before there are HG issues.

i cant vouch for the std 1G gaskets as i dont have a 1G but i like the HKS gaskets and they are a good thing to have on a 4a runnng that sort of boost.

I know its extra cash but its also piece of mind knowing that you wont have any probs with it.

im thinking along the same lines as 30psi 4agte here, ive blown my fair share of 1gs now (although the tune was questionable) ranging from hg to piston rings, so im running a triple layer metal hg, as more a peice of mind thing, as 30psi said, ive spent a fair bit of money on the rebuild now and dont want to be cracking open the motor again.

strad my be running around 25psi but he is still not making massive amounts of power, from my knoledge he is only making around the 200- 220kw which dont get me wrong is still good power, thats all i was making, but when you start leaning on them like joshes (emp?) making close to the 300kw mark you gonna start breaking shit, and i think the hg will be one of the first things to go

anyone wanting a triple layer metal hg i got mine through performance wholesalers in brissy and they dont make them for 1g anymore , so watever is left in the world thats it, and there wasnt many left from wat they said

I just got the head surfaced, cleaned the block well with an oilstone (although if I was rebuilding properly i'd be getting it checked out), sprayed Hylomar on every contact surface, put a factory HG in it, set to the factory torque specs of 47 ft lbs, rechecked it at 500km, cracked them and reset them to 50ft lbs at 1000km. It's now copped 17psi for a few months now, it's been to the drags, it barely uses any oil and it's not used a drop of coolant. Good times.

Yep, mine was a new set of factory head bolts. Their HG's are surprisingly resilient. My must've had a BHG for AGES, and it was quite a bad one, yet the symptoms took ages for them to make sense.
