    Default 1UZ Ignition Tricks ?

I am new to these motors and need some help. I have a motor but do not have the orig. computer and wiring. I want the simplest ignition setup I can use. I want ignition only. No fuel control or gearbox stuff. I will be running LPG on a highrise manifold and a 5 speed box so do not need the extra computer stuff. I would like this to be as simple as possible. Any help will be greatfully received. Dave

sounds like aftermarket ignition that doesn't use a dizzi.

You could use the 2 existing dizzis and treat the engine like it's 2 x 4cyl engines - but you'd never get the two banks to behave identically. One way of resolving this could be dual points (or preferably VR or optical sensors) in one of the dizzis with each sensor triggering one coil for each dizzi. Would need some fanvy, custom fabrication inside at least one dizzi.

a few folk ran/run megasquirt in ignition-only mode - but most folks (like me) use it for fuel and spark.

I'm guessing this is going into a 4WD?

    chers,
    Charles.

Thanks for the thoughts Charles. It is going in a 31A Model Ford hotrod. Dave

it depends on time and money
u ould spend years tryin to get it right
or you could spend alot of money on an ignition system that will work properly
in your case will have to be a fully programmable unit

or spme people have grafted a v8 dizzy of some sort on the front of one of the cams

anything u do is not goin to be a 1 day fix

i think its easier keepin it all efi unless yr restricted by class

if u dont want to run efi theres much better engines out there like a nice big block

Thanks Sideshow. I have plenty of time but the money is not here in heaps. It is for a hotrod so the restrictions are not too bad. I am after a simple solution for a complex problem. I am sure it has been done somewhere. I will definitely use the 1UZ because of it's looks, lightness and decent power output. It might be a hotrod but I want some modern reliability. Dave

Microtech are doing a short run of ignition only LT10S's, but its only going to be $100 cheaper than a full blown LT10S.

I'd look into getting an Adaptronic and just not using the fuel drivers.

Both expensive options (~$1000) but keeps the motor looking nice and factory.
I've seen normal dizzy's adapted to the front of the motor but they look horrendous.
Definitely not what you'd want on a nice looking rod.

Depending on your time frame, proper LPG injection may be out in time and you can get a fuel/ignition ecu to deal with this.

actually proper LPG injection is already out, its quite expensive though but very good. although in saying that it does use a piggyback ECU which doesn't really help you in this case.

i don't think there is any hard and fast easy solution for you here. i'm not sure whether something like a haltech IG5 from years back could also help you much due to the 1UZ using the pickups from both banks and one from the crank.

So far I have had a lot of options and will try to work out the best system that suits. Thanks Grega. There is a setup on kalmaker that is similar to what I want to do. I just don't have enough info yet. Dave

yeah i know i've looked at the kalmaker stuff but i havent' had any hard and fast info as to whether they have got the delco talking correctly to both dizzies

from what i gather they were grafting camira dizzies onto the front of the heads and using a box of tricks to do something with the signal to get it to work

Delco talks with both dizzies with Dicks Box.
    Its a $500 or $600 box that requires 2 V8 ignition coils ($200 each).

So Kalmaker ends up costing the similar amount to Autronic, and I'd know which I'd rather.

A tuner in NSW somewhere made a box that will interface between all the stock 1UZ sensors and the standard V8 Delco 808 ecu.
His name is Dick something, his last name escapes me.

So it got nicknamed Dicks Box.

In NZ the motors are used alot in speedway in carby form, I will see if I can find out what they do for spark.

Im using the Protek ignition only system from cylinder head specialists in Ch Ch. I got the engine running over the Christmas break and it sounds beautiful, needs to get on the dyno to tune carbie ( i don't think the flames from the tail pipe will make the certifier happy). Just need drive shaft to start doing wheelie's.

Hopefully that gives you some leads.
