There should be more than one wire going to the alternator. There should be a plug with 2 wires going into the alternator as well as the wire that bolts on.
Hey guys just change engines from 18rc to 18r and the wiring is a mess.. i have the main power wirer going to the starter motor and then one more that goes to the aulternater.. but when i turn the engine over doesnt sound like its getting spark.. plus when i turn my key to "on" no power to my coil and one other thng when i turn my parker lights on.. i have no lights behide my cluster but i have lights on my clock and fuel and temp gagues... not on the main cluster.. have i missed some where that there needs to be power ?? or can i bypass this and re wire the coil just really wanna get my engine started :/ ... ive check all the fuses and there are ok

To check if you're getting spark, pull the main high tension lead off the distributor and bring it within millimeters of the body or engine block, then crank the engine. You should see spark jump from the lead to the body/engine. There are test lights for checking spark too, but I usually prefer the cheap/dangerous method for all things.
But if you already know there is no power at the coil, you need to figure out why first. Given that the cluster isn't powered, I suspect you have missed a wire, wired something incorrectly, or shorted a circuit.
Photos of what you've done, and wiring diagrams for the 18R and car you have can help diagnose the issue.
Be sure everything that needs a ground is properly grounded.
