windage tray
skirt around oil pickup
sump flaps and install fixed baffles
Ok, so maybe this wont be as popular as the quad schlottle body thread, but i need some inspiration for my new sump. Currently thinking a fairly standard winged jobbie with internal flaps for oil restriction. Kind of like this one:

Anyone have better suggestions, or advice?

4A has a seperate windage tray which is sandwiched between sump and block.
However, with that last picture you have posted it looks like they have installed a hinge in there for some reason and then welded it down.
Any reasons?

its not welded down, its free to swing. note that it swings forwards - this is a drag engine sump - lots of g's under launch - trap door is for preventing slosh to the rear of the sump.
edit - im reassesing trap doors...![]()

Oh i see now, i thought that the lines across the bottom of the trapdoor were from where they had bent the metal. Rather it is two seperate pieces.
Understand now.
Why are you re-assessing trap doors?

i initially disliked them...
but reading some stuff just now whilst looking for those pics, im beginning to be sold on their specfic use in winged and otherwise increased volume sumps. *shrugs* guess im just used to fixed baffles
id be wary of gunk and resin making them stick shut though
also, if youre playing with sumps, consider how youre ventilating it:

After talking to my head guy about his sump designs he highly recomends the pressed steel mesh, his reasons are that as oil flings off the crank in all directions, it hits the mesh and it directs it down to the sump

have you seen the ARE sump for sr20s? the pick up "swings".the idea is it will move as the car leans, thus following the oil.
i dont know about moving parts in the oil pickup, but its a noval idea.
a few tips from a book i just finished reading:
make sure the pickup is between 9.525 and 6.35mm from the sump floor, to prevent surge and not restrict the pickup.
it also suggests a horizontal baffle with a hole cut in the middle just big enough for the pickup to go through (so you can fit the sump) the edges of the hole should be flared/funneled down to allow oil to go into the sump and prevent it coming up the sides.
just drysump it
you have vented both cam covers on your race engine haven't you? you might be able to run two inlet covers for that JDM tuner look (i need to confirm you can do this on smallports)
Is there any reason why the book quotes such precise figures for the distance between the pick up and the sump floor? just seems a bit wierd :S
theyer conversion from imperial 6.35mm is 1/4" ect..
dimitri is on the money, should have just written them in imperial i guess.
