System will only take fluid from the overflow as the system cools down.
Hey Peeps Daniel here.
So for a little while my 7M-GTE MZ21 has had a coolant leak coming somewhere from the left side of the engine.
I've had a decent look at it, pulled the turbo off, changed thermostat, the seal and hose etc etc.
It only begins to leak as the car warms up. It doesn't poor out but just drips.
For now I'm just hoping it's some hose that SOMEHOW I have missed, and not a welsh plug or anything.
I'm only driving my car short distances atm (15 mins max, don't want my radiator to go dry) and when the car cools I check my water level in the rad.
It's always a good level, topped right up. But the overflow reservoir's level has dropped. So that must mean the radiator is taking in water from the overflow as it leaks out, right? Well that's what I've always assumed anyway.
So, now for my question:
Will my cooling system take in water from the overflow as I'm driving? Or only after I shut the engine off and let it cool?
Reason for asking is because I want to know if I can just stop on the side of the road every 15 mins or so, top up the overflow bottle, and just keep doing it that way.
Having the car looked at tomorrow to locate the leak so I can fix the bloody thing, and put actual coolant through it.
Thanks guys any advice is appreciated. - Dan

Put a pressure tester on it and you will find the leak in 30 seconds
could it be from the water outlet fittings on the back of the head as they do corrode? it could leak there and run down?
Hey guys thanks for the replies.
twiztd, Thanks that's the info I was after, its a shame it has to be that way though![]()
dnegative, Yeah the mate I'm going to tomorrow has a hoist and a pressure tester, hopefully wont take long to find
Sam_Q, Yeah my cooling system was VERY corroded when I first got the car. When I finally pulled my thermostat, oh good lord, lol. And yeah I'm thinking it may be somewhere back there.
Cheers guys- Daniel

The reason that I know about that fitting is because by request I was asked to get all the bits in along with other 7m gear, now I sell a kit that's as follows:
$35 for the lot, genuine Toyota for the lot.
No need to fully close the cap, pressurizing the system and forcing coolant out, unless you're running it very hard or that engine has a lot of hot spots that need the pressure to keep those spots from bubbling.
