How should I go about building a sweet engine out of my 5MGE, Oh wise one? You know your shit!
You could always start with a 7m short block, and bung the 5m-ge head on. I know most of the gasket is the same but you would need to check carefully around the front where the timing case seals. GTE pistons have a massive bowl, maybe enough to clear the central valves, otherwise just get GE pistons fly cut to suit. Or do it properly and get custom slugs made, but i just ordered a set of those and i wont shit right for a week after CP finished reaming my bung hole.
Im sure i can make you up some custom cam gears to suit and the rest would be (fairly) simple.
Of course it can/will be argued that you are going backwards replacing a 24 valve head with a 12 valve one, or that toyota already made it for you in the 6m-ge but im always keen to see some build something themselves and do something different.
Carbies will be sweet as, i still have 3 dellorto's here i want to hang off a 7m one day. i've spent most nights this week on the CNC making the new manifold for my lpg carb which uses a holley throttleplate to meter the air, doubling my butterfly area over the stock 7m junk :-)
For the record, you're going about it the wrong way, my dellorto's are for a proper 5m/7m hybrid, short stroke crank + 24 valve head for epic high rpm shenanigans

Having owned a 5m, 6m and 7m don't waste your time, just rebuild a 7mge instead. This will get you the 3L without the pain of mixing parts. It will still look at home in the engine bay and provide the best performance.
Start with the best base you can or it will cost you more in the long run.

carb'd 6MGE in 80's toyota is a bit of a dream of mine
7M definitely makes more sense, but carb'd 6M will sound way more awesome![]()
Yeah, Somehow I have a feeling the 7MGE would sound more revvy then a deep rumble...
I've decided anyways, I'm chucking it in as is, Maybe doing the rings and bearings if it needs it, Then getting a manifold made for the triple solex's and a nice exhaust system. I'll cruise around in it like that until I get bored, Then we'll see where I go from there... I've still got a Turbo RG sitting in my shed that needs to be put together >___> So many plans, So little time and dollars.

well yeah, my first point of call would be putting a 5m-ge head against a 7m-ge block (w/timing cover) and see how it all lines up. i havent seen how the front of motor is setup on the 5m-ge in terms of sealing the timing cover, but this was the only crucial difference i found between 7m-ge and 5m-e. 5m-e being chain driven was always going to seal differently at the front of the HG, but being belt drive the GE head might give you a better chance. you could even compare both head gaskets to get you started.
7m's really do sound great when allowed to breath properly, much nicer than 2jz IMHO, nowhere near as tinny. there are some who will argue that a 12v I6 sounds better than a 24v, but i think that's horses for courses. my pick for note is still the 7m, its raspy, its deep, it roars, it barks and it fucken screams up top. my proper exhaust is on a mates car at the moment and i get goosebumps everytime i hear him fire it up.
there are some pics in the cressida thread of how my 7m looks with all the EFI gear stripped off, its kinda purty. stand by for more pics in the next couple of weeks when the new manifold goes on, should look pretty old school then.

Well perhaps I'll work on a 5M/7M hybrid while cruising around with the 5MGE in the Supra to begin with. Interference engines did always intrigue me. Do you use the 7MGE pistons and get them modified for 12v or do you use the 5MGE pistons with the 7M rods.

Yep as art racing said the compression height (pin to crown) is different and the piston will sit too high or too low in the block by a few mm
Now i think about it, off the shelf 6m replacement slugs would be the perfect choice and fairly cheap. Should give correct comp height and the 2 central valve reliefs.

What is the point in using the 7M stuff then?I might aswell just hunt for a 7M crank and rods, haha. No, A whole engine is easier to come by, I know that much. I'll start a thread once the cars moved down here and I've begun work on it, But the 5M/7M hybrid or similar won't happen until the 18RGTE is finished... Or even started! >___>
