    Default 4AGE 20V best oil

    Hi Everyone,

I just have another question for you toyota nuts about the 4AGE 20V motor.

I have had a look around but couldn't really find a definite answer about the oil required by these engines.

    What I have been told:

A 4AGE 20V motor builder said that I should run 15W-40 oil in my car (didn't specify brand or weather it was synthetic etc) as its just over 125k on the motor
The previous owner said that he changed it with Nulon 10W-40 fully synthetic a few days before selling me the car (looks like a legitimate claim)
I have also read that 10W-40 is the way to go on other forums

    My questions are
With the fully synthetic the engine seems to be a bit noisy when it's hot, yes i believe it has a bad pulley but when cold the engine seems to be a lot quieter. Would running something thicker like 15W-40 Suit for daily duties and a bit of spirited driving and quieten it down a bit? Would the engine even cope with this and what brand should I run? Should i run Syn/Syn Blend/Mineral? It is also using a lot of oil if that helps at all..

My next question is does it matter that for a TEMPORARY fix as its low on oil and I have no way of getting any during the day as I work very long hours that I put a 600mL bottle of Caltex 10-40 Synthetic Blend in it to get me through the next day or two when I can get some oil? I have already done it as it couldn't be helped but is this ok for the motor? I will be dumping it all out in a few days anyway so I can chuck new stuff in though.

    Any help would be appreciated

    Cheers, Jacob.

As long as the oils have fairly similar api ratings (sn, sm, sl etc...) they should mix ok.

Id be going for penrite HPR15 if you want something a bit thicker. Penrites oils are very good and cheaps because theyre aussie. should set you back about $50, castrol edge is about 75, mobil about 80.

Synthetic oils are best. Theyre better at everything. And yes thicker oil will quieten things down.

Ok so to be safe i should do a flush when I change the oil again?
As for the Castrol and the Mobil what grade should I run then?

No such thing as 'best oil'!

Using, then you've got much greater problems then anything else written if it isn't because of a leak/s.
Use any straight 30 mineral/dino, check it regularly, drive it till it dies, good luck.

Also, how much is 'using'? Please don't write per day/week/month.

Wait, not use engine oil flush/cleaner/additive?

What do you mean straight mineral/dino? mineral oil but what is the 30?

Had the car for two weeks and the oil went from half full to low.. but that could be because I have been thrashing the shit out of it :S

Does blue smoke come from the exhaust under throttle? On start up? is there a oil puddle in the driveway?

Nope no blue smoke at all and no puddles on the driveway or around the engine/chasis at all.
I do get smoke but thats only when i redline and its because it's running rich.

    Its a 4AGE 20v.....
Like 7M's blowing headgaskets, its pretty common for a 20v to use oil.

I would stick with 10-40 or 15-40 tbh

My suggestion would be 10w40 as well. Dont know about specifically 4AGE but for sr20's, have been recommended valvoline Engine Armour as it quitens the tractor noise down

the noise is likely to be from a worn VVT pulley which you can't really do much about. keep it topped up with the best oil you can afford. 10/40, 15/40, 15/50. anything around that range will work more or less well enough, go slightly thicker if it's chugging oil. Theres no hard and fast rule with this shit. It's all rules of thumb and seeing what works best on your specific engine and its level of wear and tear.

The single most important thing is to keep the oil topped up and change it regularly. Do it religiously every 5000kms if you can.

Thank you very much for the information, might just go a bit thicker at the next change

As for the pulley i tested it and its not the issue. I think it may just be the thin oil, my last car did it too when i went to synthetic oil.. that and the injectors are noisy by the sounds of it
