    Default Turbo Choice - Silvertop

I've been wandering the web for ages trying to get an answer I can trust without any luck, so I'm throwing this question to the knowledge base here.

I have a Clubman with a strong rebuilt Silvertop / Haltech E8 in it - but I'd like a bit more grunt. The car is a streeter, so I don't want to go with more cams etc, and a low boost turbo seems to be the way to go.

I'm looking for around 6lbs of boost with minimal lag [most of its mileage is at track days]. I don't need anything more than [say] 170-180 hp ATW ; the car is currently 126 - 140hp depending on the dyno. I can package an A2A intercooler and everything [though it will be tight], but I need some recommendations for the actual turbo.

It needs to be physically small [see below], and readily available from wreckers or such [too many children to afford a new one]. I'd prefer ball bearing and watercooled. The available space will be below the space frame member running from behind the head to the middle of the engine bay [packaging issues]

    What are your thoughts????
    Cheers ..... Rick Jones

Or since it's only 6lbs of boost your looking at, that is well within the realm of most cheap superchargers. A cheap SC12 or M45 supercharger would suit the job.

S13 S14 S15 Sylvia turbo's off the SR20DET Nissaids engine are cheap and (give or take) pretty much the same thing as a GT2560r.
They are however aging 2nd hand turbo's... Need to check for shaft play i.e. not enough to allow the wheels to hit the housings. Visually inspect for wheel damage and if all ok then pucker up and hope it lasts!

WRX turbo for sure. Very nice bits of gear, but small so not commonly used. They can be had near new cheaply as upgrades are common as arseholes.

Your spoilt for choice if you only want low boost, a good old T25 off a Silvia would do alright

Do you happen to know Andrew CP, with the four door R32?
I'm 80% sure this is the car he has been telling me about and he borrowed my old CT20 to check size-wise?

Definitely looks like you have room to fit an WRX turbo though

You could also get a TD04 off a 4g93T Mitsi GSR lots of guys sell them cheap as they go to the TD05 off the evo

But yeah the Wrx turbo would also fit well

Ill do you a comp map shortly (bored at work )

Only issue is if you want to upgrade later your stuck with the flange to suit the wrx or evo turbo and if you go for a silvia turbo then your stuck with a T2 flange (t2 flanges are easier to swap to t3) umm If you get a late model silvia turbo it will be ball bearing and watercooled

Depends how soon you want boost to come on however (I wouldnt worry to much as you have 10.5:1 comp to help it spool and be good off boost)

Do you happen to know Andrew CP,
    Cam,

Yep - he's my little baby boy [hard to believe isn't it!!!]. Your CT20 is still sitting on my desk but it'll be a tight squeeze which is why I haven't been throwing beer tokens back at you.

Does anyone have a gut feel for the relative sizes of the TD04 / GT25 compared to the CT20?

As I indicated, because I want to mount it low [so I don't have to make a new bonnet] the available space is tiny - like everything else about the car.

Thanks for all your advice so far - turbos are a whole new venture for me and I really appreciate the help you're all giving.

WRX turbo is tiny, smallest of all and BB while the TD04 is not i don't believe? The WRX turbo is the best solution and the CT20 is rubbish. TD04 or T25 would work fine as well, but just not in the same tech league as the WRX unit.

justin your thinking of the STi turbo, which is a VF32/34. have a look at lenjimans corolla which is/was using a TD04L turbo and made 250-260whp (granted it was 20psi, but still)
    N/A for life...

STi and the version on the 2.5's i believe? I'll have to get the exact details of the one i handled as it was a super nice bit of gear and has proven very responsive on a 900cc bike engine...on a low boost 1600cc it would be a torque weapon

GT25 is quite a chubby little unit when complete with actuator. Looking at the photo, I think itd fit pretty well provided you can get an intake under that alternator.

I just fitted a 2560r to my 16v 4A. I just sold a t25g. At 6psi the 2560 would probably be overkill as it can go to 20+PSI. t25 is good for 12-14PSI. Here is a size comparo for you. Once the boost bug bites, I doubt you will stay at 6PSI for long hehe..
