Hey guys,
1st time running in a rebuild engine and need some advice.
spoke to my tuner and he wants to run the car in on the dyno and give it back to me ready to go play at Toyota Nationals.
Engine has had a bottom up rebuild with new rings and bearings, plus head work and cams. plus all the other goodies including turbo, power fc and injectors etc....
I have spoken to a few people that tell me that the car will still need to be driven on the street for about 500-1000kms before I give it a hard time, even if the tuner "runs it in" on the dyno
Can anyone shed some light on the subject?
We first started, and ran my new engine in on the dyno step loading it for around 150k's. Dumped the oil, drove on the road up to 500k's (total), dumped the oil again, and did the same at 1000. We were tuning during most of the first 500km period, and sorting out bugs. After that, we then started seriously leaning on the thing.
I think (opinion only) that it is a great way to go, as there is no chance of being stuck in traffic or behind a heap of slow traffic etc, so you are guaranteed to get the right conditions. Also, it means that you can check for things like minor fluid leaks all the time, where you can't easily on the road.
I would be slightly apprehensive to go straight from a 100km initial run in on the dyno to Toyota nats. There is a lot of tuning things you can't do properly on the dyno.

how many kms will he be "running it in" on the dyno for and how bad will your wallet be hurt for him to said dyno run in?

The run in is included in the full tune so its not costing me any extra. I will be asking questions when the cars dropped off in a few days, think I will get the run in and tune then put 500-1000kms on it and take it back to fix/check everything.
the only engine builders i know say it is ALWAYS best to run them in on the dyno, controlled environment, can fatten up the fuel / timing / boost etc to simulate all those kinds of conditions and km/s... breaking in an engine on a dyno can be done in hours vs a week of driving around town hoping you don't get stuck in traffic.. everything from 25K + FJ20/SR20/3SGTE builds to 80K+ 1200hp Tony O'Conner 10,000+ rpm NA Small Block's
we brought mine up on the trans brake 3 times, then ran it on the dyno for 20 mins at various speeds, dropped the oil and filter, then bang, straight into the 30 pound plus tuning, no issues at all. every one wil lhave a varying opinion on it.
