rods bolts will be ok depending what sort of the work the motor is going to do. same with the mains exept in a high power and rev situation you get CAP walking so you have to choose to do it based on what work the engine will do.
Excellent thread...just put into words and images what I thought I knew...My own engine rebuilding experience is hopelessly dated ancient history but my generally unknowing practice was not to reuse internal engine fastenings...never blew a crank...but this was pre turbo days,,,lots of diffs though
..the only thing I can add is that there is an in use heat differential that effects tensile strenght and hardness/flex that would be hard to replicate to a proper scientific decision point in a normal work shop...again thanks for the thread and inputs...Cheers..

are bearings likely to float if mains and rod bolts are reused?
because theyve stretched alittle and not pulling down properly?
just wondering this as my bearings have some serious wear which looks like theyve been floating a bit and i didnt rebuild the engine last time so im not sure what went on down there![]()

Punctuation is the difference between 'I helped my Uncle Jack off his horse' and 'I helped my uncle jack off his horse.'
I had this e-mailed to me a many years ago by a toyota-mods.org mailing list member. I finally managed to find it. I will see if I can dig up the rest of the page that went with it.
It is from some old training material.

Ok.
It took me a while, but I found that old pic.

for the price of new toyota rod bolts you may as well just buy new ones
and for a race motor for the price you may as well go buy ARP.
both are quite cheap and suit their intended use perfectly
This is not from stretched bolts but the rods actually stretch from the pounding and the diameter of the rod increases where the bearing sits.Originally Posted by love ke70
Your rods need to be resized if there is any evidence of movement.
When fitting new bearing shells they MUST snap in tight or you will be in trouble.
It is good practice to resize rods and replace rod bolts every time you do a major rebuild on any motor that will be worked hard.
