well i was sitting on the porcelin throne just before, flicking through an old issue of HOT4's (wow.. what a thrilling techincial treasure that is! ) and i found an "indepth" 4 page article on adjustable cams! out of the whole thing i managed to get "remember this isn't a gospel guide", "don't by cheap ones" and "just take it for a quick run on the dyno, see how it goes" BUT anyways... i also managed to extract some useful (and possibly correct) information, they said that many manufacturers have retarded (-ve) cam timing, this is due to the reasonably restrictive exhaust system, this way they reduce the amount of gas that gets drawn back into the chamber through the exhaust valve... so if you've got an aftermarket exhaust, then you should pick up a few ponies by advancing the exhaust cam,

HOWEVER, i think that if there was any problem with back pressure forcing air back into the chamber, then an aftermarket exhaust might help it MARGINALLY, but so long as you've got a stock manifold and turbo, then you'll find the issue will remain...

but they also suggested the name of the game is adjusting the power to get it where you want it moreso then making an extra 50kw...

As far as I am aware, the 1G-GE cams have about 0.2mm more lift than the GTE cams and there is the overlap thing as well (this is all well out of my teritory in regards to Cam timing)

if you look closely at the factory cams you will see that they are adjustable buy Approx. 3 degrees each way. but placing them on different locating pins.

Prolly no where near as good as the adjustable flavour but possibly helpful.

    Cheers

Ok.. Well I was just chatting to someone in the know about this topic, and aftermarket gears for a 3s will not fit a 1gg.

I know that the standard gears are the same part number, BUT there is a shallow side and a deep side to the gear. The shallow side has an "S" stamped on itwhich faces outwards in a 3S application. The deep side has a "G" stamped on it which consequently faces outwards in a 1GG application.

I hope I got that so people can understand it... We just don't want to see someone buy a 3S aftermarket gear and try fit it to a 1GG...

um, why cant u turn around the aftermarket gear?
i had implied earlier they went on different sides by making note of the S and G on different sides

Cause an aftermarket gear will not have been made with the dual offsets in mind...

but is it not still going to be the same width
and to fit a 3S it will have to have the same offsets as stock, so i cant see why u cant turn it around and make it fit?

Basically an adjustable gear wont have a deep and a shallow side... It will have 2 shallow sides, which if bolted on backwards on a 1GG will make the gear sit too far outbound. By making a gear adjustable, you make the centre at least double the thickness of standard.

EDIT : Now just having a look at a gear I have here, by making a adjustable gear for a 3S, will make 1 deep side, and 1 almost level side... But will still make it sit too far out on a 1G.

This has been a while coming, but here it is anyway.

Why you cannot use a 3S adjustable gear on a 1G.

I tried explaining it, but pics show it better anyway.

The offset (or backspace) of a 1G cam gear is different to a 3S, and there for standard wheels can be exchanged between the 2, but not adjustable types.

The gears on the left shows the depth in which the gear protudes out on a 1G, marked by the white line drawn on it. It has a depth of 18mm to the face where it meets the camshaft. The gear on the left shows the orientation it would be on a 3S, and therefore shows the 7mm depth, a varriation of 11mm by turning the cam over and bolting it on the other side.

I hope I have explained that well enough.

yeah, i gotcha there, was looking at mine on the weekend, can we confirm that the gears for the 1G and 3S are the same, just flipped 180deg? would there be a possibility of using a 3S adjustable cam gear, with a bush/spacer to compensate the offset, and use a longer bolt to secure the whole lot??

    yes theyre the same
cant u just turn a 3s adjustable around?
or jus use the spacer as mentioned
    i think its doable
