Default Help needed- 4runner not starting

    Hi all,

just serviced the 4runner (4Y-E) and I've replaced the following:
    starter motor
    water pump
    plugs
    plug leads
battery terminal connections + negative lead to chassis and engine block
    all fan/alternator belts

and I'm doing oil + filter and coolant next.

The issue is when I put the key in the ignition and turn it to 'on' I can hear two clicks, they don't seem to be coming from the starter motor or alternator, more near the intake manifold. When I then turn it further to start the engine I get a slight dimming of dash lights and nothing else.
I've checked my connections everywhere I can think of, the battery was fully charged when I started the service and had the negative terminal disconnected. I'll put a battery charger on it now and see if that makes any difference at all.

Hoping somebody can offer some advice

is that the same as the fuel pump relay?

I'm having a look at switches and relays for the 4YE here and over the next page, but it doesn't jump out at me

    Thanks for the reply!

    EDIT: is it 85915A?

Are you getting power to the starter solenoid and is the battery charged?

Battery is charged to at least 80% using a decent charger, I haven't/am not 100% on how to test power to the starter solenoid (other than the leads/plugs connected - which they are)

    What's the best way?

edit: when the key is 'on' and I have the interior lights on, trying to start the engine dims the lights. so that should mean power is getting to the starter right?

Get a helper to turn the key while you have a multimeter on the terminal, if you get 12v and the solenoid engages then your doing alright. You either have some sort of shitty lead from the battery, the battery is fucked or your new starter aint so flash. If you get nothing then check the work backwards. Starter relay, fuses, ignition barrel etc

Sweet, I don't have a multimeter on me at the moment, but will test that tomorrow in the morning.

If i don't get 12v on the starter and I want to check the main power cable is it as simple as running one of these from position to the starter? or does it need to run through a fuse? I have just replaced the terminal connectors and I wasn't happy with the look of some of the postive leads.
or even if it's just to test that it isn't the wiring that's currently in place

The starter motor I bought is dud, worked once after we pulled it out and bench tested it before not responding again at all. So we pulled apart the old one, cleaned it up, got rid of stray bits of metal and tested it again, working perfectly.

So now she's back in the car, it cranks but won't start. Battery is OK, tested old leads and new leads, new plugs, tested old plug in cyl #1, loosened the top of the fuel filter (newly installed) and there's plenty of fuel (and pressure)
All plugs are connected as far as I can see.

Check for spark on all cylinders
    Check spark timing is ok

Then spray something flammable down butterfly
If it nearly starts or starts then u have fuel issue

    Check basics

Thanks dumbass! (feels weird typing that)

I ended up checking all the connections and shit again, then checking all the fuses one by one. I decided to see if it wouldn't even crank without the 'main relay' and it started. so after checking that it wasn't a fluke I put the relay back in and she still goes.

when should I see a significant increase in my oil pressure gauge? idling it doesn't seem to move from low. I haven't driven it anywhere yet though, still checking I've got enough oil in there.

oil pressure should come up just after the engine catches also dependent on what weight oil you use oil temp and whether gauge is mechanical or electric

hilux oil pressure gauges are the worse toyota has ever made

if engine sounds ok when u start it then dont worry bout it

at end of the day by time u see an oil light come on or oil gauge drop to 0
and your on the freeway yr engine would most prob be close to fkt hehehe
