    As Justen as said,
Ive had several ALT tensioner brackets crack on these 18rgs and they make a horrible noise.

When you say the tensioner bracket, you're referring to the curved slotted bracket attached above the water pump? Where would this normally crack? I've got a nasty noise at the front of my RG and so have parked it until I can get time to check it out but if its just an alternator bracket I'll fix it and start driving it again.

Ive had them crack under the water pump bolt and at the start of the slot close to the pump.
Welding is a temp fix, but they will crack again next to the weld.
I dont have my 18rg anymore, but I did find the "C" channel shaped bracket was a lot stronger than the flat one.
Just remove the tensioner bolt on the alt and you may find the bracket falls off in your hand.

    Hey Guys,
I think we have this one solved. Because of the big ass stereo in the 30+ year old car , the alternator was replaced with a EA Falcon version as per another thread. The standard bolt has a longer thread and shorter shank than the Ford item. Where the alternator bracket met the thread has flattened and has just enough slack to vibrate. Removing this stopped the noise and the frustration

    Thanks for the suggestions!!
