If you can get the engine running - even with idle set very high - you should be able to get the timing set to something close just by feel - ie, twist the dizzy a few degrees either way until you get the engine running reasonably smooth. Then use your timing light to get the timing set just right (10 degrees BTDC at around 800 RPM with vacuum advance disconnected).
