i ended up choosing a Haltech on my 1J, im still in the final stages of installing it and plan to fire over the next week.

My choice was first based on speaking to the guys on the haltech display stand motorex(oooh shiny!), then i asked around to see who would tune with it, turns out there a a few in and around canberra who will and that even convinced a mate to set one up in his skyline and he loves it

all in all ive found ive probably spent a bit more than i needed, but its all brand new (and Australian!)and i wont need to travel all that far for tuning
i guess the moral is talk to or check with your local tuner as previously mentioned by a few others...

    Something to keep in mind.
It's 1 thing to not use all of the feature that a computer offers and another thing to realize you need or want a feature your computer doesn't have.

i read half way thru this thread and gave up.. this is my two cents..

3 best computers on the market without involving motec ecus in no particular order are..

-haltech ps2000 (have one in my own car, does EVERYTHING and way more than i need it too)
    -link g4 extreme
    -vipec v88

microtechs, the older haltechs, apexi power fc etc are all sub standard ecus, with very limited functions and tuning abilitys, and with only a minimal jump in price and you move up to a very advanced ecu that will last you years..

for example, those 3 ecu's listed above, add a $120 boost solenoid and you have a boost controller that can be set in closed loop, gear selective and works perfect, try buying that as a seperate product and youll be paying $400 MINIMUM..

putting the extra money into a good ecu, saves you money later on.. i found with my car and my haltech, wanna add thermo fans?, intercooler water sprayer, run your fuel pump without running a shitload of relays and wiring, power up a shift lamp or in my case 2 of them.. all easy and with no extra cost cos i just pull out another output wire from underneath my dash =)

the anti microtech crowd on this forum still amaze me 10 years on since i bought my first microtech, i have never had an issue with mine, my cold start was fine even without an idle air control valve. my fuel economy was fine. there a plenty of examples of cars on this forum and many others that run microtechs without any issues and great results on and off the drag strip, they are not a drag only ecu.

if i was doing a street car or race car i would go either the current microtech or haltech, they are both capable ecu's and well priced.

and as for judging a computer by if it has an autotune function, why the fuck would you go and spend thousands of dollars on an engine set up to use a auto tune function.

Let the world know how you go setting up a continuously variable valve timing engine, electronic boost control and dual fuel and ignition maps with a Microguess.

Autotune is powerful and highly useful tool. Jealousy about it because you don't have it (or you have to pay another $725 just to data log AFRs), makes Baby Jesus cry.

yea because every forum members ride has a vvti engine in it, look at all those vvti 7m's 1g's 3t's and 18rg's getting around.

for a street car the boost control options on those ecus that have it would suffice, but if your doing motorsport your going to want something better to give you better control. ie ams1000 or eboost 2, progress boost curves, different boost in different gears, progression with wheel speed etc. as this member wrench has specified its a drag car only to get the most out of his package hes going to need a boost controller like a ams1000 to get the best et.

so if you wanted every last bit of horsepower out of your setup would you just go with an autotune, or would you get a tuner to extract it, i havent seen too many autotune cars getting around medium to top levels of any form of motorsport. im really jelous i dont have it as im sure autotune would have helped me win more championships and had me running faster then 8.40 at 165 mph. i dont know how i can live without autotune in my life lol

Well, the world does move on.
How many people would have been saying the same thing about needing to control an injected engine with some new fangled computer thing, when clearly carbies and mechanical advanced distributors can do such an awesome job.
Check out the continuously variable valve timing 4 and V6 Toyota engines. They are new performance engines for the average Toyota enthusiast. Unless your computer has the ability to provide that control, you'll need a different/better 1.

Go and download the Adaptronic software and have a look (you'll also need a tune file to actually open it). They have gear based boost control, launch control and traction control without having to spend another $600+ on an eBoost that can't deliver launch control and active traction control.

Yeah, you're right. You 'only' have to spend an additional $125 for data logging...........
It's the Microspec AFR meter that you have to use that cost $600, too.

I'd rather start with an autotune fettle fuel map that was driven on the road and then do fine tuning on the dyno.

Well leave a thread for a couple weeks and look what happens lol.
Anywho, i managed to get in contact with Justin from Blacktrack and had a good yarn to him.
Yes my car is just a drag car. 2JZ-GTE with A340E auto.
I have ordered a Microtech and eboost 2 through Justin as was his suggestion. More than happy with the service so far.
As for launch/traction control... i do have 15 x 11.5 MT slicks on the back of my falcon, isn't this enough? lol

haltech has launch control... great for drag...enough said... lol

they all have pros and cons, everyone has an opinion and has had varied results. if your tuner has recomended the the parts and will get the best results for you with those parts then go for it

BTW, good motor choice, if its not toyota bodied ford is a great substitute!! (im not biased lol)

just for reference sake, read recently that some wolf ecu's can control a340e ect, dunno what the rest of the ecu is like just thought it may come in handy for someone after that function.

Yeah justin also mentioned that the A340E can now be shifted the microtech also. I just have it hooked up to the stock dash indicators like as on the " how to manual shift a A340 for less than $10 ".

As for using the ford body with the 2J, well my poverty model XE weighed a grand total 1320kg from the factory, so compared to the Supra, aristo, soarers and cressidas is really a light weight i guess lol.

    Nice work wrench....

the computer is for me quite a small part of the tuning. The tuner is the key. Pick some one who is experienced, reliable, and not a tool to talk to....

You wont go wrong with Justin - plus he obviously has the runs on the board with jz power, and he goes to the drags and events and supports his customers.

will be keen to see how it goes!!!!
