Does it increase with revs? Like the frequency?
developed a noise driving tonight.. Wasnt even driving it hard..
Noise is sort of like a faint knock only heard above 3 grand..
Occurs more under load, but can be heard very faintly free revving..
Tappety noise but louder
Its not blowing any smoke out exhaust.. ie. not a serious knock (no oil past rings)
Any suggestions??
possibly loose harmonic balancer bolt?
happened before..
Thanks

not really, why?
what you thinking... i can take it![]()

if the noise frequency (not pitch) doesn't increase with engine rpm, then it may not be engine.
if it increases with road speed, it could be gearbox or drivetrain...
if it's valve train, it will be half the speed of the bottom end, and if it is one of the ancilliaries, it will be a different speed again![]()

big end bearing?(ok, I'm just trying to freak you out)
BHG between cylinders? it is the poo motor
compression test to be sure?
can you get someone else to rev and try and get an idea of where its7 coming from?

I reckon the noise would be worse if it was something that bad..
I think its deffinitly engine, sounds like its coming from the front.. maybe it does incerase with revs, but not by as much as the revs..

edit.
got a steel head gasket, not heating up at all..
it started happening after i drove for about 30 mins, switched the car off for about a min, then drove it again... if that helps
it could be something as simple as a tensioner pulley bearing... really the only way to tell for sure is to get someone else to rev the engine while you have a poke around with a stethescope/screwdriver
yeah i might have to chuck it up on a hoist and have a listen..
The last time it made a noise like this it was the harmonice balancer nut came loose.. Same sort of noise but not as frequent... yet.. i will have to check tomorrow.. its dark and cold outside.. and there is wolves after me..![]()
cheers for the help, keep it coming..
P.S WTF are you people doing awake, its midnight here so its like 2am eastern time aint it? dont you people sleep..![]()

Doubt its this cause between cylinders gets worse pretty quickly and within a couple of mins (if that) you'll have a full blown rexi.Originally Posted by oldcorollas

if it was BHG i would sound different out the exhaust and lose power wouldnt it?
its lost no power and sounds exactly the same, the noise is a faint mechanical noise, like a knock but very faint..
gonna go chuck it on a hoist now and have a look..
cheers
Mine did similar. turned out the rear subframe was looseof course, the noise didnt sound at all like it was coming from the engine bay
