    (assuming a composite gasket)
surely compressing it, and spraying it with hylomar (which should have been done) there will be bits and pieces of gasket and hylomar all over both surfaces. i dont mean machine them again, but scrape all the shit off, prepsol it and make it all 100% assembly clean again.

recently i tested my new head on the existing engine then pulled it off less than a month later, i still had to spend an hour prepping the head again before it went on the new short block.

working clean and general surface prep is the #1 thing when putting this stuff together (hence always having the air going)..... i spend more time cleaning than on tools when i build an engine, bhg job etc.

BTW - how the smeg did you put the HG on the wrong way?

    Off the cylinder head.

I did crank it with the turbo oil feed off, and yes oil did come out.

    This thread needs a face-palm pic :-)

    Glad you found the problem.

I've taken note of the things I should've done when assembling my engine, but didn't. Like turning it over to build oil pressure without firing it up. But I did use a 2nd hand pre-assembled bottom end, not new bits.
And I'm really glad that mine worked straight away despite the mixing of the Gen 3 & Gen 4 bits.

THat's awesome news Roundy, at least you can progress from here, and stop ripping your hair out

Facepalm is much cheaper than engine removal.

Fwiw, I always smear a thin film of goop around the oil feed hole on the gasket - helps remind you to place the gasket correctly over the oil supply hole on the block.
