Shouldn't these all be questions you're asking the engineer? Not trying to be a smart ass or anything, but you have been talking to them.
What did they say?
Hi all,
I called a few places in VIC regarding engineering a 4EFTE in a '98 Starlet EP91. It seems like trying to engineer this is harder than I initially thought. As engine was not an option in the ADR EP91 and it must meet ADR37/01 regardless. Engine came from a car of earlier date, I'm not sure what year exactly, but definitely pre-1997. The cost of getting the test done is over $1000 as far I know, without even paying the engineer cert yet.
I have got a front mount in the car, not sure if that would create further problems for emissions. Electronics and fuel injection is stock. Got a 2-in cat-back (new cat) exhaust. Would these stop me from even rolling into the emission test centre? Do I have to have stock intercooler and exhaust to even attempt the test?
Anyone here have done the same in Victoria? How did you get to do it? Please help me out.

Some said that as long I pass the ADR emission, it's no problem (yes, fair enough I know). Others said don't even waste money in putting the car through ADR as "it would fail simply because engine was not available in Aus for a reason"
I want to know what other people have done before with this similar conversion before spending the $1000+ for the test and then figure out I have to re-test and pay another $1000+
I think most people that have done it have used the newer model Glanza half-cuts, I could be wrong.
check out www.austarletclub.com.au for more accurate information though man.
Yeah mate you need the glanza 4efte engine (turbo ep91). That will solve your problems for less dosh and effort than any of this testing nonsense. The exhaust will be fine and intercooler could be done at the same time as long as it is done properly.
P.s. This is if you were in QLD. VIC could well be different.

How do I know which year the engine is built from the engine number?
australetclub man,
it's all about starlets there, just register and ask away - but do a couple of searches first just incase it's been asked before.
:-)
Even google search your query with austarletclub as a keyword and you might get lucky.
There are a few here in qld. It CAN be done here.

Anyone has done the ADR37/01 emission test here? What's involved and what's checked/tested?
You can't. You would need the build plate from chassis of the donor car and someone to interpret it.
If your donor engine is younger than your recipient chassis, you shouldn't need emissions test. As it's is the other way round, you appear screwed. A good muffler and cat and exhaust will keep noise below ADR. But my guess is you will need an Emanage blue with very well set up ignition, injection and AFR trimming to pass. Fmic should not pose a problem. Then just re tune the emanage after you pass the test
I imagine your engineer would also require disk rear end, but some don't.
AE90 Silvertop - GONE; 2001 ST215W GT-T Manual - SOLD; EP82 Starlet GT - Sold
Now driving 20V Turbo 1.8 N-S FWD
I would assume that if you sit and pass the emissions test with an aftermarket computer, that you should have no problems with anything regarding the fitting of a non factory computer.
After all, the reason that they don't like non-factory ecu's is that since they are not of factory specification, it will alter the emissions of the car from what it was when released from the factory, which is how the car/engine passed the adr or equivalent in it's country of origin.
Most things can be engineered, (and correctly modified upon advice of your chosen engineer), problem is "how much do you want to spend"?
matty.
