Stem seals usually only smoke on start up and after you've gone down a hill if they're really bad.

stem seals only smoke when there's manifold vacuum (e.g. idle, decelerating, etc), unless they are completely shagged, then it'll smoke pretty much all the time (had this happen!).

so removed the dump pipe today. didnt seem to be any visible oil :

Towards cat and muffler - no blockage

Just the usual amount of smoke appearing after the dump pipe was removed. Didn't seem to be extremely white or excessive , just normal exhaust fumes. How can this be?

Also it was suggested that there might be oil in the lines running to and form the iscv as the white smoke happened mostly during idle. Disconnected the lines , their seemed to be a little oil as you can see:

After all this , the smoke still exists , only when warm and only during idle.

Dont know what else to do...

can you ask the guy that built the engine if the valve stem seals were replaced?

I did actually , yes they where. But valve stem seals will smoke on startup as well right? This is only when warm.

yes usually it will smoke when cold then clear up. But can do it warm when coasting down hills under vacuum.
could be toasted oil rings or a prob with breather setup

ok quick possibly stupid question. I know this is unlikely but after checking EVERYTHING im clutching at straws here , so ..I stumbled accross this :

"When my coolant temp sensor was going I was getting what looked
like white smoke from the exahust during idle only... revving it would
go away. So I decided to smell the white smoke and it didn't smell like
coolant at all but it did smell like gas. Turns out the bad temp. sensor
    causes it to run rich."

is it possible that my coolant temp sensor is f*cked and I simply need to replace mine ?

yes it is... but it's not your smoke problem.

I'd tend to agree...if memory serves Aloshan has a pre-89 7M-GTE with the vac controlled cold start thingy...the temp sensor would thus not be the culprit.

    yup , thanks of that

guy who came to do the leakdown test ( and i took a frickin day off work for this) thought I said compression test and didnt bring the proper tools. This after i spoke with him and said leak down test a number of times.

So that didnt get done. Out of frustration I went and purchased a compressor and attempted to do it myself. Everything was going well until I got the point where I need to get cyl 1 at TDC in the compression stroke.

Could not turn over the motor by hand no matter how hard I tried, so couldnt get to TDC.... ended up trying to for an hour or two and then just did another compression test (since plugs where out and engine was warm anyway). 150 psi on all cylinders dry.

So im getting a leak down test on Sunday at 10am , its the same guy but this time he will bring his equipment.

My mechanic (the guy who built the engine) is adamant that if the compression is that good across all cylinders then the rings must be okay. I think it is the oil rings that are the problem and not the compressions rings ,which is the reason I think its blowing smoke but showing good compression...

will have to wait till sunday to know the results....

cant you put some oil in the cylinders and see how that affects compression test results to give an indicator of farked oil rings??

Also - dont you already have 2 other threads on pretty much the same topic as this???
