Hi everyone,
I just purchased a 93 Australian delivered SW20 after owning a ZZW30 for 5 years (short, sad story).
My car has developed an oil leak which appears to be a RMS or GB oil.
My problem is that the oil is black and sticky (even after an oil change) and does not smell like engine OR gearbox oil (I have now changed both just to be sure). The back of the flywheel is also bone dry and crisp clean, as is the mating surface between the RMS cover plate and sump. I figure its oil mixing with clutch dust which was not cleaned off during a clutch change and thats why its thick and black.
I realize it must be one or the other but the RMS was just recently (Nov 2011) changed by IDB, I understand it can leak again but is it likely? Your thoughts would be great before I get fed up and drop the box lol.
Also my car was given a roadworthy certificate before purchase by a mechanic in South Melbourne. I would love to name them given the following:
-Gearbox fill plug loose (leaked about 400mls)
-Rear drivers side shock tower not finger tight
Most importantly the clutch dust cover was siliconed up to try and hide the oil leak. And im pretty sure IDB would not have done that. Naturally I was appalled to find it glued up in a futile attempt to hide the leak. I have since cleaned it up to try and monitor the leak. My question is does the forum have a policy regarding naming dodgy operators?
prob be the seler that siliconed it up to get RWC. don't have RWC's in WA but if it's anything like pit inspections by the DPI then they do bugger all checking if all bolts are tight.
i wouldn't think it's likely that the RMS is leaking so soon after being changed, unless it got damaged being put in.
maybe it's the gearbox input shaft seal leaking and mixing?
so was there silicon between the cover plate and gearbox? pretty sure there's a little bit of that cover which is bent to allow "venting". was that filled with silicon too?
