YN57 Hilux 3Y Ignition Upgrade Help & Hot Start Problems.

Hello All. New to the toymods forum.

I'm having problems with my 1983 YN57 Toyota Hilux, 3Y Carb. 2WD
Last week I changed the engine oil and checked the timing as is has been pinging.
While checking the timing I noticed that the mark moved around a lot so I check the dizzy shaft and noticed a bit of excess play and the vacuum advance is not working/leaking.
Must be the reason for it pinging.

If I could locate a second hand electronic Ignition distributor complete from a wrecker, I think it has two vacuum advance connections? How do I hook up the second connection as mine has only one?

Second option is to get a new aftermarket 4Y Electronic External Igniter Distributor complete from Rolin automotive imports for $275. I think there Chinese made.
I have searched online high and low to try and find some help. I do remember reading somewhere that the aftermarket ones don't last.
Has anyone tried these out?
Third low cost option?

The other problem I'm having is when the car is hot (normal temp) after 30mins or so it's hard to start - cranks over a long time before it starts. Always starts fine when cold?
What do you guys think is causing this problem?

timing ?
put some 95 fuel in and see if the pinging stops,
not sure what you mean by not working/ leaking
if the advance isnt hooked up ...it wont be advancing so thats not your problem , more likely the base timing (or the worn parts making things eratic)
you may be able to swap your (good) single vac advance unit onto the new dizzy , mine had a grub screw to undo and a wiggle and it was out .
my chinese holden dizzy (NOT FROM ROLLIN IMPORTS )flew to bits at 100 kph after a few weeks mild use ,
the internal timing gears were in a million bits.
it looked and felt sloppy , but the blurb said how excellent it was and i was in a hurry and ran with it........
they offer a 3 yr warranty so i posted it back
they asked what coil i was using ( ! ) and im still waiting
factoring in the cost of the tow and time off work , it was a mistake

The Vacum advance is connected, but when tested I found that the diaphragm/bellows is leaking alot.
So as the vacum advance is leaking and there is lots of play in the dizzy shaft I thought I would try and replace the whole distributor with a electronic ignition setup.
I think I would prefer trying to locate a good second hand Toyota one instead of a Chinese item.
Bit of a bugger about your chinese holden dizzy. As if the coil had anything to do with it falling apart. lol

Hi ,in the short term block up / off the vacuum hose to the carb so you arent sucking air in . it might improve idle and starting a bit.
there are people who specialize in vac cans if you cant find a nice one at the wreckers
just been through all this on two cars in a row and once its working nice it is so worth it !

you might be better off trying to find a elec dizzy out of a tarago 3/4y
if the top bush is flogged out it should be cheep but easy to fix
if you strip the dissy and give the housing and shaft to a engeering shop they will turn you up a new bronze bush and fit it
used to have them done for about 75 bucks

what do you need to do (ie vac advance and power) to make this setup run?

ive got one of these for my dads yn57 but never knew what to hook up on it.

I have blocked off the vacum advance temporary until I can source a replacment.
I'll go to the two local wrecker when they re-open in a week or so after the christmas/new years break
I hope one of them has a good electronic distributor or I'll have to try and re-build my one.

I fitted a Crane XR700 electronic ignition conversion kit to my Hilux years ago and it is still going strong. It cost around $250 when i bought it. Timing moving around is usually caused by stretched or broken springs in the mechanical advance mechanism of your dizzy. I would get another dizzy from the wreckers rather than a crappy chinese one and put an electronic ignition conversion kit in it if they are still available.

I'm going to a wrecker on Tuesday when it re-opens. I just hope they have something for me. Preferably a Electronic Carb 4Y Distributor.
If not I might have to ring around a few other places around Australia and get them to send it to me and just hope it's a reasonable one.

make sure you get the module too or it wont go ,and the next six modules you get wont be quite right
there is an electronic " points eliminator type kit " on ebay at the moment
that looks interesting...
if you get stuck search electronic ignition coversions here there is an excellent tutorial

but if you have a wobbly shaft id get that sorted first...
