Corolla has been sitting for a while - but its at the stage now that I NEED it running!!..
I even purchased a compressor for the above suggestions.
Also, to eliminate mechanical fuel pump problems all together, I bought a universal electric fuel pump for carby cars.
blown back fuel line with compressor
fitted new fuel filter
fitted new electric fuel pump
upgraded to 8mm fuel hose
problem still exists!!
car still misses/hesitates - and it just stalls and dies after about 20sec of idling
its like I did nothing at all, but just spent all my cash
next suggestions please!! need to get this sorted asap!!
cheers
Damo

Damo, I had a similar problem to you after putting my motor back together & the problem was mud wasps got into the fuel union when the carbs were off the motor for a while. I got money on carb blockage somewhere. My plan of attack if I was scratching my head in your garage would be:
Check wiring - faulty earth could be giving you weak spark. Coil should be getting ~13V to give a good spark. Put a screwdriver in the end of a plug lead & hold it within 10mm of bare metal on the motor & you should get a fat blue spark when cranking.
Check for vacuum leaks (did 4Ks have PCV valves? could be faulty, brake booster, vacuum advance diaphragm on dizzy etc).
Check the dizzy again for timing, rotor freeplay, points gap, advance mechanism (weights & springs - are they all working smoothly?)
Then if that doesn't net anything, remove carb, check the float level, clean the jets out, record sizes just for reference if you need them later & spray carby cleaner all through it backwards & soak in petrol overnight then blow compressed air through it.
If all that didn't work spanners would be flying! Goodluck getting it going again
Cheers, Jess
Well problem after problem - I THINK has been resolved... but I'm not counting my chickens just yet until I get a few days worth of reliable driving.
Finally had someone with some mechanical knowledge look under the hood (YAY for mechanic friends!)
several problems found while going through the engine bay:
1. (probably the major one) still not getting enough fuel! despite installing an electric fuel pump, I wired it up all professionally to the ignition, the pump wasn't getting enough power and hence, engine/carby not getting enough fuel.
to test this, connected positive straight to the battery and the fuel pump came to life clunking and pumping away a lot louder. suction and fuel delivery are now good.
2. spark from coil was also a problem. swapped over with a spare coil, but to no avail.
turned out that the wire from the condensor and the wire to the points were old and oily and generally not getting a good connection/earth.
that was all cleaned up with some oil & grease remover and put back together.
3. also turns out when I bought the new dizzy cap I put it on 180deg the wrong way, so it wasn't seated properly. FAIL.
turned that around so the dizzy cap had a nice tight seal again and the rotor can make nice clean connections.
took a bit of trouble shooting, but seems to have got it running good now at least at idle and with a bit of revvs. Havent had a chance to take it for a test lap just yet.
theres a bit of blockage is the carby jets which can sometimes cause a very fine miss... but not really enough to worry about at the moment.
now to tidy it all up and put the car back together for a test drive!!

hopefully its all sorted apples man!
Damo how do you find the electric pump? and were did you obtain it hehehe.
good trick damo is whilst revving the car and filter is off put your hand over to block the carby from sucking then quickly relase hand to not allow it to turn off keep on holding the revs.......done this on a few carby engines and sorta unblock things....just watch it tried this on my 351 V8 and flameage came out... haha

hey dood. fuel pump is from MALZ .. cost me $89 I think
seems to be working fine and was easy to install.
done that carby trick to try and unblock it. I think the jet(s) are just old and worn, probably as good as its gonna get without a full carby rebuild. It runs, and I'm happy with that
did a few test laps around the block yesterday and seemed to go fine. so topped it up with some fresh fuel and drove into work today.
so far so good. *touch wood*

a week later and the little 4K is still driving, hasn't stalled or hesitated.
however, from time to time, the fuel pump will get really noisy and knock away - quite audible, even over the sound of peak hour traffic.
I popped the hood when I got to work, and seems the fuel filter is still only getting half full. yet getting enough fuel to the carby to keep it running thankfully
it indicates that there must still be a restriction getting fuel from the fuel tank, even though I blew back the lines with the air compressor
Whats the next step ??
should I try blowing back the lines again? or maybe theres something mechanically wrong in the fuel tank ?
is there anything I can add to the fuel that will maybe break down or remove whatever has built up and causing the blockage/restriction ?

I would remove the fuel tank, clean it out check for blockage of the lines and if your keen replace the whole fuel line with correct size bundy tube with p clamps if needed thats what I did on one of my escorts as they run a plastic fuel line.
