    Default Bonnet Hinge Repair

    Hey guys,

My passenger side bonnet hinge has sagged quite a lot, to the point now that the bonnet struggles to open.

Is there a way these can be repaired / remanufacturered? I would buy a bunch of them as a bit of a group buy thing if there was such a way.

I have had my door hinges re pinned by a machinist at my dads work years ago and they worked like new, id say the same thing can be applied for the bonnet hinges..

Bonnet hinges are a bit different Nath. Door hinges are heavy cast steel with bushes in and can just be re pinned and bushed as i have just done on my RA23. Where as bonnet hinges(which i also need to do) are only about 2.5mm pressed sheet metal with bugger all in the way of bushing etc. I will tackle mine shortly Stradlater and let you know how it goes. I have a feeling that they wont be bushed though and that it will just be worn rivets and sheet metal causing the problem. So I would need the sets of hinges here in NZ to bore them out and weld in bushed inserts with hard pins etc etc last for another 50yrs. What would it be worth to you? I can suss out if its worth me doing them over here.
    Cheers

Nath - Yeah, the bonnet hinges are pressed steel, and TBH I actually think the structure of the hinge itself has bent over time, rather than the pins.

TTV8RA23 - Are you sure that cutting out the pins and welding new ones in would be the go? I would of course send them over if you could repair them, however I'm not 100% certain that that's the main cause of the problem.

If you were sure though, I'd certainly pay for it to be done. The only question about the money is 'what are my options'. IE, if I could buy new ones for $100, then that would be the limit. I know that's HIGHLY unlikely, so here's my conundrum. :-)

Stradlater i havent actually looked that close at the problem just noticed them bending when trying to open so un bolted them. just assumed pins were seized or something placing undue load on the sheet metal. Was also thinking bout fabbing some up if need be. Would not be a cheap exercise though. Would be $400 minimum for new solid as hinges.

There would be a decent demand for remanufactured hinges if someone was thinking of doing a group buy. Would definately be worth doing them for TA22 also

Stradlater, we have got hold of a perfect set of bonnet hinges andare looking at making up a jig to straighten bent ones then weld in a reinforcing plate like we have done my bonnet hinges in my 23. I will let you know when we get it made up if your interested.

Bracing we have done to mine is shown in the bellow photo, i'll try and get some better pics:
