Default Which of the first generation celicas will a 1jz-ge fit in?

I am currently interested in purchasing a first generation celica and giving in a bit grunt with a 1jz-ge. I was curious as to which of the first generation models does this engine fit in? Thanks.

you would be looking for the T/RA23 or the RA28 - the TA22 model has a smaller engine bay (can be made to fit but definitely a much tighter squeeze). Added benefit is that the slightly larger 23 and 28 models will also take a steering rack from a ke70/ae71 or an ae86 with fairly minimal modification which allows you to do away with the steering box.

If you're going to all that trouble though, why 1jz-ge and not gte?

    Cheers,
    Doug

Well a 1jz-ge isn't a factory option in any of these cars and will therefore require engineering to be registered. Not sure about in Queensland, but it is 1000% not P plat legal in NSW NSW - I would definately check this out first before starting on this project. How much longer until you get your full licence?

and it'll be too powerful for you in Qld while on P1 or P2 licence. See here: High-powered (performance) vehicle restriction (Department of Transport and Main Roads)

Can't have swapped motors on p's in QLD.

I had a 3tgte in my ta23, and was going to just remove the turbo and drive it around as a 1.8 N/A motor.
Part of the p-plate rules is no engine modifications or swaps, not including replacement engines.

So I had to remove the motor completely and replaced it with a healthy 2tg.

yup, anything that requires a mod-plate is out - unless it's your family's only means of tpt and other services don't cover the area (the link in the earlier post covers the exclusions0.

    Yeah fking shitty rules.

you can however have 'replacement engines'

the rules that consitute that are something along the lines of...
'Same manufacturer as original engine' (toyota, deerr)
'No more then 10% larger capacity or power output'
(Therefore if a TA22/3 as it was a 1.6 so you could go absolute max 1.76.. and if a RA23/8 2.0 could go to 2.2)
Can't remember stocko power outputs but you get the idea.

i'm sure there's other rules i'll remember later.....
