    Default Q's re: AE95 brakes

Hi guys as stated I have a couple of corolla AE95 4WD wagons (3 actually)

I'm mixing and matching parts as well as doing engine conversions to build one for rough roading, one for street and the third will get tickled up and sold.

The AE95 has discs on the front and drums on the rear.
Q.1) On the rough roader can I change the rear drums to discs? If 'yes' What's involved?

Q.2) On the street wagon I'm happy leaving the brake set up stock standard. It's just I recently got a roadworthy and the mechanic did warn me that the pads were low. Yesterday I got a vibrating noise from the rear right drum when braking hard.
Having seen replacement parts on ebay, I'm just wondering how hard, if at all, it is to change over brake pads?

Hey OST I'm not adverse to spending money on my car/s but that doesn't mean I don't look for a bargain either.

To be honest I don't know much about which brand is better etc.

    (How's grunt going?)

So wish I had an AE95 sedan

Grunt is doing fine... she pulls like baby ox now that peak torque is under 3000 rpm. In fact my wife likes how Grunt pulls so much she wants me to do something similar to her AE86 GT-S... So when I do her car, I'll likely be doing a ported smallport using a clip and flip intake, and seeing if anyone will build me a set of 232([email protected]") stock smallport duration cams, BUT with about 8.3mm of lift, instead of 7.1mm of lift

Asked the question in another thread:

Found the answer I was looking for.
    Thanks Terra Operative

It's a day job at max. "

remember AE102 and AE112 are both fwd, not 4wd. Before you do a lot of work... check that the rear set-up will fit. You might be able to use a AE86 rear diff (disc brake version). I know the track rod is mounted in the opposite direction, but the rest may be the same

Yeah... in truth I don't know much about brakes yet but for the time being I've decided to swap the pads of my unregistered wagon that's receiving all the mods, over to the street wagon that I'm currently driving around in. That'll fix my immediate concerns.
This'll be a nice intro to the braking component of my wagons.

If I do fit rear discs from a front wheel drive, I don't know that there'd be any difference in the discs and callipers ability to perform properly due to lack of rear wheel drive.
Essentially they're designed to do one thing; clamp on a disc that's spinning with the wheel.

Personally I don't brake with the gears in drive either, (unless I'm shifting down in gears using the engine to brake as well.) ..so I don't think it would matter FWD or 4WD..

I know about the 2 types of suitable AE86 T-series diffs that are compatible with the AE95 but they have 4 x 114.5mm PCD whereas the AE95 uses a 4 x 100mm PCD and quite different diff ratios to the AE95 diff and being and AE86 rear axle they tend to have a high asking price, so not really an option in my opinion.

(Interesting to hear your wife's got an AE86 though!)
