Mitsi or Subaru are the most common to use over in NZ. Easy to find at wreckers as well.
Im busy putting together the last of the waste spark distributor-less ignition setup together for my 7m. its based around the ford EDIS system and thought i was stuck with the AU coilpack but ive recently learned that -
These coil packs work with EDIS controller:
Any Ford 36-1 trigger wheel and VR sensor, e.g. Falcon
1997 V8-fitted LTD with EDIS
Zetec engine VR sensor (which is aimed at the flywheel instead of the crank pulley)
These reportedly with with an EDIS controller. Any coil pack without internal drivers:
Toyota
Mitsubishi
GM DIS coil pack (typical Holden 2-spark coils, a la GM 3800)
Chrysler coil pack
Bosch coil pack
id like a good strong coil, which is readily available. i plan to get it going with wrecker coil packs to start with, and be able to upgrade to something "hot" later on.

I pilfered the Twin/Twin coils off a 2000ish Hyundai Excel, as they come on a really nice bracket. The Holden 3.8L (think VN/VR/VS) has a bank of 3 twin coils, that can be used.

The Excel items must be useful somewhere as haltech sell them as new items. I have never used them so I can't comment. The commodore pack a decent punch from memory. I'm pretty sure I remember my trainer at holden school saying 90,000v.

I've always been very impressed with the stock 7MGTE coils.

yeah i had thought of the vn type ones, i know they can be split up which might make putting em in the bay easier. i also know that msd hake a hot version of it, which i reckon id struggle to find for an excel?

FWIW, Tristan@WTFauto used to run the VN type coils on the sequential turbo-d v6 in the MR-2. Had no problems giving a good spark at 15 odd psi or so.
Alternatively, as mentioned, the 7MGTE/4AGZE coils give a solid kick, but if you want the new then they aren't really a price effective option.

Then - 1989 MX83 - The big scrap heap in the sky...
i had thought about 7mgte, but you dont stumble across them that often, and as you say would be pricey as to put new ones on which it will get with the new motor
so commonwhore ones it is then...

I thought the V6 VN coils have some electronics underneath them (as part of it's CAS/Ignitor setup) so to wire them up simply, don't you have to perform some surgery on the base plate of them first.
The Hyundai coilpacks are basically bosch items made under licence and are considered fairly reliable.
If you want to massively increase the coil power, why not grab a set of MW waste-spark coil packs and then drive them with a 4-channel CDI box of which you use 3 channels of?
Seems like the Hyundai cails have a good rep. I just grabed them as they were $10 at a wrecker and fit the bill.

waste spark should be ok without needing CDI
a bit of butchery doesnt bother me, plus a few people seem to use the vn style ones with the megajolt. i will look into the hyundai ones too

I've used both the hyundai ones and the vn ones.
I've pulled the VN ones apart and they don't require all that much to dismantle, they are simply wired beneath, so no fancy IC trickery.
The Hyundai ones are recommended by haltech because their configuration works with the Haltech equipment. I've used other Hyundai gear and they appear to be good new quality equipment while being relatively simple therefore adaptable.
which would be the pick of the 2 strad?

yeah i heard the AUII had good ones.... however havent found much aftermarket available for a later upgrade. i was leaning towards the hyundai ones, but asked a towie mate today which car he picks up more of with dead coils he said they were about the same, and gets a few of each.
