Supercharging a 3T/2T-G Hybrid in TA22

I have been thinking about this some more, and looking for ideas/input on how this all works from a technical perspective....

Here's a rough sketch of an EFI setup with forced induction, noting where the air and fuel are mixed in the system:

Now, using gearb0x's intake contraption, and using the solex carbs in place of the fuel injection - note where the air and fuel are mixed:

So theoretically from a perspective of mixing air and fuel, what's really different?? I am having trouble pointing anything out that would stop the concept from working. Ideas?

Everyone says that till i tell them that the runners aren't "separated" in the "plenum" part.

But it does allow one to use a single filter with even air distribution.

As for the Idea expressed above. Unless you use some kind of "BOV" (speak to nick parker, he has a BOV with a specialized spring for this application) things will blow off or bend. So long as the solexs will fuel properly under pressure it'll be fine otherwise

I have read there are a few "tricks" to modifying the solexs for forced induction... and webers have been run for it too. I am awaiting a reply regarding what is needed by the solex guru of toymods

A friend of mine put one of these SCs (its a SC12 or 14 i think) on an RB30 before and he used a "relief" style valve similar to a BOV. Maybe he can tell me if it will do the job

Of course he had EFI but that's beside the point.

Sealing the float bowl and throttle shafts from atmospheric pressure is a must. Also the floats must be made to not crush under the pressure (plastic floats are fine, brass with expanding foam inside apparently works too)

A boost referenced fuel pressure regulator is a must, and a fuel pump that can deliver the goods isn't a bad idea either.

Jetting the carbies is a whole more complicated to get right. EFI is a much better way to do things.

the more oddball solutions you look for, the more expensive and dissappointing they'll be.

Mine & others suggestion still stands as the simplest:
-2TGE EFI intake (+ larger injectors)
-3TGTE zorst & manifold
-some kind of FMIC or adapt a top-mounting W2A cooler above the motor
-learn to wire up 4 sensors, a boost line to the ECU, wire up a fuel pump relay and the 4 injectors...
-purchase 2nd-hand ECU

i really cant see this as harder than fabricating up custom brackets and piping for somethign that then requires days of dyno tuning with a shop that knows what carbis are.

Whilst I appreciate your advice and knowledge, I must admit you are adding fuel to the fire

I am a very determined person, and the more someone tells me I cant do something, or why I shouldnt, the more determined I am to do it. I hope you understand that

thanks for your advice, and one day you may be able to tell me i told you so, but in the meantime I'm happy to persue this as it has obviously been done and I want to give it a go.

I guess since there is not many people on toymods who can help me out, I will see if I can track down some yanks who can give me some advice

Since they have done such crazy things with 3Ts and all....

I am one for oddity and craziness of conversions, I really hope I can pull this one off as it isnt impossible. I think I would at least get a great deal of experience and a sense of achievement if I can make it work, and it would be fun to do - this is the sort of stuff that makes me happy, its my hobby

5ILII: if you're deadset on old-school, you need to have a look at Cliffs 18RG RA28: - turbo+ W2A intercooler pushing air thru 2 side-draft carbs - 18R admitedly, but very nice engineering.

Similar thing as what you're onsessed on doing, but a big old garrett turbo instead of a roots supercharer.

I have done this conversion many many moons ago and whilst it was fun, different and sounded cool, the power was a little disappointing. Well i guess maybe that is compared to what i have now

Mounting the blower wasn't all that hard - just many hours spent at the local Toyota wreckers looking over parts and working out what would be useful. Eventually i got it sorted and used a 2TG AirCon bracket that was slightly modified.

I did write up a document on this which i believe has been linked to previously in this thread - have a read of that as that will give you a good starting point. I have also PM'd you the link to the doco on my web site Dana.

I am not really able to give you much help on how to do it with carbys i am sorry, as mine was always injected - but most of the theories are all the same.

Would i do it again if i had the choice? Hmmm... probably not, i would just probably turbo it.

There was a turbocharged Alfa Romeo from the 80s, a GTV Turbodelta. I'd never heard of it before until a friend of mine bought one. It runs twin sidedraft Dellorto DHLAs and an early Garret/Air research turbo.

Unfortunately this is the only picture I have of it:

Considering there isn't any intercooler, it went alright. Off boost however I think it ran a bit rich because the carbies have to be tuned for expected boost pressure.

PM is coming Dana. Just working through the issues, formulating my ideas better. You have me really thinking about it.

Mr Simpson keeps suggesting that I do it to my 2T but time has never been available and I have also seen it done many times before.

. The Chuckster mentioned Cliff's name, the man who turned up to the Celica Nats (mid to late 80's) nearly every year with a new version of forced induction. Is he contactable?

As said before it comes down to sealing things up. Turning something that stops air getting into the vacuum on an N/A set up, into something that stops pressure escaping.

The Toyota3TC forum is a valuable tool for reference also.

An SC running a max of 6-8psi which gets to about the maximum an N/A system's fuel pressure. Pushing through twin Solexes is very achievable.

a friend of mine turboed his 3k buy bolting an su carby to the turbo inlet and making a turbo maniold and pumping the air/fuel straight into the engine, it ran really well until he snapped 3 rods in his engine, so he rebuilt it and sold it. in his ke30 he did pull a good 14 second pass at willowbank, his only problem was the enigne had a v8 size cam and was 40thou ova bored, it was a tough engine before the turbo. he was running 6-8psi.

just something else to think about.

rodger: Cliff's not yet found the internet - he takes his old-schoolness seriously :-) ... but if you go to the Nationals this year, or rock up tot meetings or show events for the Toyota Car Club (after the Nationalso) in Brisbane, you'll find cliff and maybe his T04+twin-carbi 18RG in a RA28.
